The Monkey Butler Did It

Parker is the latest signing to the Jackmode agency roster, and I trust Jackmode like I trust a fat kid to like cake. I downloaded this mix without any prior knowledge of Parker and it turns out it’s part 3 of the ‘Did It’ series of mixes, all of which are winging their way on to my pod now on the strength of part III.

Perfect for those times when you just want a little change from the romantic floaty stuff – this is hip hop, disco, and old greats all edited up to put some pep in your step.

Very nice indeed.

We bloody love Yuksek

One thing I like about mixcloud is that I’ve set up ‘new cloudcast’ alerts to my work email, and it brightens my day when a new mix wings its way towards me. Especially when it is someone I love, and don’t hear from enough: king of the remix Yuksek. And doubly especially when the description starts with ‘we bloody love Yuksek’ and the tracklist starts with his remix of the beautiful Lisztomania by Phoenix. French, tres chic, creating melodic electro, and, let’s face it, pretty easy on the eye.

It would be wrong of me not to share the love (and he can sing too, something I didn’t know).

Woody’s Roundup

The longest month of the year is finally drawing to a close, and hopefully with it the long drought on the ol’ cash flow. Clubworld has cottoned on to the fact that pay day is soon to shine upon us like a weak and distant sun, and there are quite a few tasty options for the weekend.

So, here we go: tonight go east for A-trak at XOYO for Moda, along with Monarchy, Fenech-Soler and Russ Chimes, or Big in Japan down the road at The Book Club, or further east Aeroplane is playing at The Nest in Stoke Newington. If you like things a little harder Pendulum, Doorly and Joker are playing at Ewer Street car park for Spectrum’s 10th birthday, but it will be cooooold. Tomorrow Mulletover returns to Cable with Sebo K and Crazy P, and Plastic People is well worth a visit for Caribou and Floating Points. At the Queen of Hoxton, Apocalypso features Dekker and Girl Unit – Girl Unit huge for Wut last year, and Dekker killed it at Fabric with his Twin Peaks sample Stop (listen here).

Spanning both nights is Double Trouble Vision at Corsica Studios, tonight with Roska and Roller Express (a collaboration of Toddla T,  Redlight,  Serocee and Drea), and tomorrow with Theo Parrish, Motor City Drum Ensemble and Ramadanman.

There are loads of bits and bobs to listen to on tinterweb this week, including new tracks from Cut Copy‘s Zonoscope album, and Metronomy‘s new video for She Wants, so keep those ears peeled over the weekend, and here are a few little numbers to get you through an afternoon in the office.
Kraftwerk – Computer Love (Remastered)
Cut Copy – Take Me Over (Mylo Remix)
Jesse Rae – d.e.s.i.r.e. [the Deadstock 33s edit]
Jesse Voorn – Somewhere (Bass Kleph Remix)
Vampire Weekend – White Sky (Vamp Dub)
Das Moth – Moon
Death From Above 1979 – Black History Month (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Remix)

BONUS: Sneak peak at new Fake Blood track Medieval (thanks to Gotta Dance Dirty for this rip).

Jogalani, Quandong, Broccoli (and an exclusive remix)

The fourth EP in a string of greats from Malente‘s No Brainer label is Jogalani, by Swick, AKA Danny Omerhodic from Melbourne. Released on 4 February, it contains three of the most originally titled tracks I’ve ever heard: Jogalani, Quandong and Broccoli, with remixes from my favourite man Vhyce as well as Douster, Them Jeans, Chaos In The CBD and Malente himself. Shrugging the typical darker elements of the Berlin sound, No Brainer concentrates on ‘the happy end dimension,’ with a more fun afro-beat style electro, full of percussion and characteristically banging basslines, so Swick is the perfect choice as a fresh young producer to add to their roster. He’s also responsible for the latest in the No Brainer podcast series, which you can stream below (DJ Orgasmic bootleg of Ludacris? Yes please), and he’s kindly given us an exclusive remix by MayaVanya, two girls from New Zealand who are about to team up with Magik Johnson for their debut single.

We asked him some quick questions about the new EP and his tropical sound.
Happy new year! It’s great to see that 2011’s already started with a bang for you. Were you at home for Christmas? Is it barbeque on the beach?
I just spent my christmas at my grandparents house like every other family in the world I think! Haha.

Melbourne has built up a deservedly great reputation for electro, with the likes of Midnight Juggernauts, the Bang Gang crew and Cut Copy, do you see yourself as part of that or would you categorise your sound differently?
Yeah those guys are awesome so I wouldn’t categorise myself with them at all, but our sounds are actually really different; my music is more fun and stupid I guess.

Who did you listen to growing up?
I used to listen to Prince a lot because my dad was a big fan. I don’t really remember what else, but probably some embarrassing stuff!

You’ve also released on Bang Gang founder Ajax’s label Sweat It Out! And both labels have an irreverent look and sound. For me there’s a definite similarity with No Brainer in this kind of ‘tropical’ element to the music (which I loved when I heard your ‘Under The Sea’ take). Is this why No Brainer was an appropriate place to release Jogalani?
Thanks, glad you liked Under The Sea. Yeah I’m really happy to have a release out on No Brainer, I feel like the music does suit the label.

Amazing remixes on there too….
Yeah the remixes turned out amazing. I like them all especially the Douster remix!

Are you playing many promotional dates for the EP?
A few- this Saturday I am playing at After Dark Social Club with Malente and next week I’ve got a show in Brisbane for the EP.

Are you playing any dates in the UK?
Nah not yet, I wish! Me and my friend hope to come over to Europe soon though…

What are your next plans? Are you in the studio at the moment?
Yeah I have been working on some new music. I have an EP out next month on Top Billin which I am excited about!

Thanks very much for talking to us – keep up the good work.
No worries. Thank you!

Paranormal Symphonies

Time has flown since we were admiring Raz Ohara & The Odd Orchestra’s Miracle. Now, Patrick Rasmussen has taken another step into the realm of leftfield electronica as Omurah. The first track under this new guise was Colefire, which featured on the Get Physical Full Body Workout Vol. 4 compilation in 2008.

Now, his first official release as Omurah goes by the name Paranormal Symphonies. A-side, Die Hochzeit (or ‘Wedding’), is described as ‘a deep and hypnotic fusion of slow-house tempo and analogue transformation’; post-rock. But it was the title track and b-side that caught my attention. Paranormal Symphony combines twisted melodies and percussive house beats beautifully, and the remixes come from two young Berliners, Nu and Christopher Schwarzwälder, who give it that tech-house tint on the one hand and Balearic ambience on the other. Paranormal Symphony was released last week exclusively via Beatport on the Kindisch label.

Twenty excellent minutes of Raz Ohara live can be sampled here. Enjoy!

Hey Today!

Kill Em All at Fabric blew our minds again this weekend, and the excitement levels felt like they were about to spill over as we ran from room to room, desperate not to miss anything. In between the mighty Erol Alkan and Jac The Disco we caught a little of Hey Today!

What I love about Fabric is that the industrial, subterranean surroundings are so wonderfully conducive to the electro-indie-rock hybrid that is my very favourite sub-sub-genre. Hey Today! played a hard set but one that suited room 2 perfectly, and had the crowd absolutely unable to contain themselves.

So get yourself to the nearest underground exposed-brick-and-metal space you can (anyone got a bomb shelter in their back garden? That’ll do), and have a listen for yourselves.

Tracklist

2. Hey Today!- Strange

Woody’s Roundup

Kill Em All! Kill Em All! Kill. Em. All.

Yup, it’s Kill Em All tonight at Fabric, and everyone’s who’s anyone is on the bill. Erol, Filthy Dukes, Django Django live… Yes please! I love those butterflies in the stomach on a Friday when it’s hard to concentrate on work. Bournemouth’s Big In Japan are hosting room three and resident Tosh Ohta has given us a little taster mix, which he tells us was mixed live in using two 1210s, a CDJ1000 Mk1, a DJM600 mixer, 17 records and one CD, and which I’ve been loving this week.

On Saturday it’s well worth braving the cold to head to XOYO for Snap Crackle and Pop, soundtracked by Zombie Disco Squad, Deepgroove and Joe and Will Ask. I’ve always enjoyed Snap Crackle and Pop nights, they always seem to turn out to be a whole heap of silly fun.

AutoKratz – The Opposite of Love (North Lights ft Perseus Remix)

Defy Deep Winter

Monarchy have just shared a little mixtape that they’ve been keeping under wraps while we were under six foot of snow. Still no word on the album, which was pushed back from its original release date to this January on the mighty Mercury Records. In the mean time, anything with Daft Punk and the Durutti Column in one place is guaranteed to make me defy the title and smile at the snatch of sunshine out of the window.

Take Me To The Club

We get on well with the Tape to Tape boys because their tastes in sub-genre seem to pre-empt ours perfectly. When we first spoke to them way back last year it was disco, then we all felt a little saturated, then again with a little afrobeat. This latest mix is perfectly timed as they talk about a more driving, pumping style, and with a bit of Russ Yallop and Discodeine I can see they’ve got that one well and truly covered.

The Mind Blurs

For some time now Bibio‘s oeuvre is something I’ve come to rely on to soothe the nerves after a heavy night. I started writing something about Bibio in July and it has been sitting in the draft posts of the blog since then, so perfect timing now, as he’s just announced a new album, on Warp on 4 April, titled Mind Bokeh.

His name is Steven Wilkinson and he comes from the West Midlands; rather more down-to-earth a location than his music suggests. 2009′s Ambivalence Avenue was full of dreamy sunday afternoons and the best bits of that seem to have survived the journey into the new album, Steven’s sixth, with a more coherent pop presence. Very exciting.
