Happy Birthday Your Majesty

It’s the Queen’s birthday this weekend. The Queen of Hoxton, that is. And she’s celebrating in style, with a birthday party on Saturday 5th March after a week of events (Friday 4th March sees Stanton Warriors play in the basement for That Mixmag Thing #11). 70s disco legends Odyssey are making a rare live appearance in the basement, alongside Big In Japan‘s Dan Spinney (Capita!) and Jay Karim, Cosmic Boogie, Yamwho? and the king of the edit Leftside Wobble.

We’ve got two guest list tickets to give away, email [email protected] and the earliest birds will receive an email from the Queen of Hoxton.

Woody’s Roundup

Friday hangover part II, after the legendary Bowski took to the decks last night at The Russian Bar for Joe and Will Ask‘s Vikings 004. If you’ve not been to a Vikings night yet then absolutely get yourselves down to the next one (watch this space for details next month). The energy in Joe and Will Ask sets mingles happy-go-lucky bouncy beats with grinding electronic basslines, and the atmosphere is one of a great house party: friends catch up and dance with infectious smiles. I’ve been waiting to see Bowski play ever since we first wrote about him last April, and he’s still got that ability to truly surprise people. My favourite thing in the whole world is a night where I have homework afterwards – the obsessive tracking down (often with very little to go on other than a hummed melody; after all, there’s only so many tracks in a night that you can pester the DJ for the name of) of new tracks that blow my mind. Thankfully, one that we did ask about was his remix of Cassius I Love U So, part of the new remixes EP on Ed Banger. It’s a beaut.

This all ties in rather nicely to events this weekend, as The Fat! Club are giving away the Bowski remix of Boy 8-Bit’s The Keep to celebrate Boy 8-Bit’s appearance at Chew the Fat! at Cable tomorrow, alongside the mighty Zinc. I see a rooooooaaadddddbbbblooocccckkkk….There’s an exclusive interview with the Boy himself here.

Boy 8-Bit – The Keep (Bowksi Remix)

Also tomorrow is Bugged Out! at XOYO with Matt Walsh and Boys Noize, and Cafe 1001 on Brick Lane has a live appearance from Solomun and Stimming for Holic’s 4th Birthday.Tonight Ray Mang and Pac hit up the east end at Big in Japan at The Book Club, and Warm host Joakim at Plastic People. Apocalypso at Queen of Hoxton sees Dekker (Dekker’s twin-peaks-sampling Stop is still KILLING it on all dancefloors – demo preview here).

Hopefully it’s near enough to pay day to indulge in a little disco dalliance this weekend. See you on the dancefloor.

Arveene & Misk – Love & Lust
Holy Ghost! – Do It Again
Headman – Voices (Hannulelauri Dub)
Lissie – When I’m Alone With You (Tensnake Edit)
Firefox AK – Boom Boom Boom (James Curd Remix)
Spec – Prince vs Booka Shade
Juan Atkins – Dayshift (Oliver’s Nightshift Remix)

Legendary Children

Since our good friend Jay Rossi of Jac The Disco went on his travels we’ve been chatting to his partner-in-crime Prince Pac about his solo projects for Legendary Children and Big In Japan. Legendary Children began as a blog and a series of club nights ‘all about classic House Music’ in Stoke Newington a whole year ago, and since then they’ve branched out all over East London and sent Pac DJing around the capital. They’re about to celebrate their first birthday with a huge secret venue warehouse party Saturday 5 March (event details here), so Pac did a little mix to celebrate. Full of smooth disco and acid house, very nice.

Pac’s also playing this friday alongside Ray Mang for Big In Japan at the Book Club. We’ve been keeping a close eye on Big In Japan since they hosted Fabric‘s room 3 for Kill Em All last month, and this mix sums up the disco vibes we can expect this weekend. Enjoy.

Woody’s Roundup

Urgh. Friday hangovers are the WORST. Especially if you’ve planned a big old weekend dance session and then out of nowhere a sneaky Thursday night makes you want to crawl back under a rock from whence you came. I can imagine I’m going to feel similarly next Friday, after Vikings 004 at the Russian Bar, with Joe and Will Ask and the amazing Bowski on the decks. Still we persevere.

This weekend Dollop start their Citipost Warehouse series with Seiji and Midland. They’ve got some pretty good lineups for this in the coming weeks so watch this space… A little gem of a night celebrates their 4th birthday at East Village tonight; Snap Crackle and Pop, with Round Table Knights (whose new album is streaming on Soundcloud at the moment), Stopmakingme and Matt Walsh. Now that sounds like FUN. Also Islington institution The Old Queens Head celebrate their fifth birthday, with DJ sets from the Mystery Jets and The Maccabees. Tomorrow I’m very keen to see Russ Yallop at the Russian Bar, and last but not least, a bit of a strange one; Sunday if you dare, head to Ministry of Sound for Knights of the Playboy Mansion, with Dimitri from Paris and Bob Sinclar. Not so much for the music (although a Dimitri from Paris set is always fun) but more for the clientele…

Lykke Li – I Follow Rivers (Magician Remix) – Stephen’s Magic Tapes have been getting better and better – Magic Tape Seven is a joy.
Munk – Keep My Secret (Rory Phillips Club Mix) (released this month on Gomma)
Tyson – Die on the Dancefloor (Mickey Remix)
Green Velvet – Harmageddon
Hex – Gatto Fritto
Adonis – No Way Back (Vocal)
Bag Raiders – Sunlight (Stopmakingme Remix) Great to see Stopmakingme connected to the mighty Modular. Alongside releases on Bang Gang, I think he’s working to Australian domination…

You’re so fine you blow my mind….

Where there is disco, there is Mickey.

I’ve harboured a quiet love for Mickey ever since the amazingly uplifting review of 1982 track Afrique Adieu by iconic French singer Michel Sardou. His bio says he’s been influenced by music of the 60s, 70s, 80s and today, and as well as providing us with tracks which sound out the very essence of disco, he adds in a little afrobeat into the mix, and my personal favourite, a heavy dose of the piano. A very modern take on all these elements, and crafted to perfection.

Ever since then every track or mixtape I’ve heard from him has made me smile, and smily happy disco is alright by me. Resident alongside Mustang at Libertine Supersport in Belgium AND he’s managed by Dirk De Ruyck, who we all know set up the Eskimo and Abracada labels, as well as discovering greats such as Aeroplane and Villa.

His EP Farfalle came out on 12 November on Headman‘s Relish label, and B-sides Magnitude and Prelude are also fantastic. I was still hooked.

Since then I enjoy a monthly mixtape on his soundcloud page, and our relationship has been happily bumbling along, until I was reminded by Busy P’s Valentine’s Day mixtape how ggg-ggg-gggreat he is, when the tone of the mix lightened at 33 minutes in with the smooth disco explosion that is TysonDie on the Dancefloor (Mickey Remix). It makes me ggg-ggg-gggrin (and reminds me of a little classic we know and love).

Today he was kind enough to give us his latest work; a remix for Beni‘s Yeah out on the mighty Modular in March.

So here we reach the happily-ever-after of the tale of my love for Mickey. I hope you feel the same.

Mickey makes me feel like this:

Woody’s Roundup

Friday has arrived! After an eventful week where Coogan fought Clarkson and we had our first glimpse of real sun, I’m ready for a party, are you?

While Minnie is up in the mountains, clubland, believe it or not, must go on… Tonight, another sterling line-up graces The Nest, with Julio Bashmore, Riva Starr, Oli D.A.B. & Robin, Rachel Barton & Nockall, but it is Saturday that has all the fun this week. Floating Points and Ramadanman are at Cable, Plumps DJs are back with Herve and Mumdance at XOYO, and the mysterious Love Fever returns to another secret Dalston venue. Last but not least, our favourites Public House have the next in their series of special guests and UK debuts; Norwegian Terje Bakke takes to the decks at Nomad, Old Street. Right then, let’s party!

Today’s tracks are a mixed bag, but it’s been that sort of a week…

Canblaster – Clockworks
Darabi – Truckin (The Love Supreme Reversion)
Detroit Grand Pubahs – Sandwiches (Danny Daze Soughdough Jack Mix) – Danny’s been getting some love on the airwaves this week with his track Fall Away From Love.
Golden Bug & Rodion ft. Lavinia Claws – Washing Machine (Bottin’s Spin Cycle)
Gucci Mane – Brand New (Rustie Remix)
Metronomy – She Wants

One for good luck ahead of tonight: Hey Love (Rachel Barton & Nockall re-edit)  – Dennis Ferrer vs. Riva Starr vs. Donna Summer

Harlem

Helping to conclude a year of disco-infused soulful house, Russ Yallop released his I Can’t Wait / Rock Me EP in November, simultaneously putting himself firmly on the clubbing map. Yet you could argue that success was more an inevitability than a possibility; combining an upbringing immersed in Brighton’s vibrant and diverse music scene with some serious attention to the Ibiza party circuit could only mean good things…

His production skills have led to budding friendships with fellow UK pioneer Jamie Jones and Chicago’s Lee Foss, and it looks as though he is embracing his recent success on the Crosstown Rebels label with his latest release, Harlem, on London-based Hypercolour’s new sister label, Losing Suki.

As usual, with a new release comes an exciting new wave of activity. Last week Yallop presented us with a new, eclectic podcast through Ibiza Voice. Plus, in February and March, there will be opportunities to catch him in person, if you’re local to Birmingham, London or Brighton:

Face presents at the Rainbow Pub, Birmingham – 12th February 2011
Jaunt & Pleaure
at the Russian Bar, London – 19th February 2011
You Are We at a secret venue, London – 5th March 2011
Death by Disco with Lee Foss at Al Duomo, Brighton – 29th April 2011
