Woody’s Roundup

Bank Holiday! Just when we were getting used to the five-day weeks. Not that I’m complaining, you understand…

So, let’s celebrate by getting as mashed as we can for as much of the weekend as we can. Tonight we’re seeing the mighty Tiga at XOYO for Bugged Out, then we’re straight off down to New Cross for Lunar presents the Carnival Party. They’re a new monthly night and this is round 2. I can’t tell you how important new nights are to me; catch them early and you get that house party vibe, amazing DJs in cool venues, and that whole feeling of being a bit naughty staying out late. Lunar moved to Release in New Cross because they were spilling out of the doors of The Nest, and Release has just re-opened after 12 months, so it’s time to go back to the South. It’s a car-neeee-vallll so playing are bashment kings The Heatwave, Hipsters Don’t Dance and new DJ collab Twin Peaks (Goulcher and Stocky).

Warm up your shake-it-muscles with a little mix from The Heatwave: Archive Mix for Lunar (particularly Ward 21Hotta Betta Phatta at 16 minutes in).

Tomorrow Black Atlantic brings Moodymann and Joy Orbison to a secret location, and there’s a Love Fever party too at Reliance Square, and Sunday The Old Queens Head have another All-dayer with Hervé. I love these slightly jaded Sunday-day-time affairs. Day parties seem to be the event du jour, as 2020 Underground are hosting Steve Bug and Jozif all day at Shoreditch Underground, then pick yourself up and head off to their nite-version, 2020 Vision Warehouse Party, with Mark E, Maya Jane Coles and Ewan Pearson at Village Underground.

A few notable tracks this week, including Munk‘s new release Mis Labios, out 20 June on Gomma, and another great remix of Monarchy‘s I Won’t Let Go.
One Hump Or Two – Detrot Grand Pubarz – Zombie Disco Squad Bootleg
Munk – Mis Labios (Black Van Remix)
Declaime – Apocalyptic Music (feat. Aloe Blacc)
Depeche Mode – Master and Servant (RSS Remix)
Monarchy: I Won’t Let Go (Jaymo & Andy George Remix)
Krafty Kuts – Lets Go Lets Ride
Chlore – Oh The Revenge – DARYL Remix

Up on the Roof

We like spaces here at One From The Vaults. We like dancing in warehouses, we like exhibitions (and Campari Bars) in car parks, we like DJing in abandoned shops. So we’re pretty excited about watching films on the Queen of Hoxton’s roof.

Rooftop Film Club starts on 1 June (it runs until September) and includes the classics The Lost Boys (10 June), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (16 June) and Weird Science (5 June). There’s food and beer, comfy chairs and wireless headphones. What more could you want?

We’re heading for a preview for Stand By Me – we’ll report back…

Oh Busy, you are good to us.

I’ll let the man himself explain:

A bit before the birth of Ed Banger records and just before the last release of Dj Mehdi’s Espionnage label, Feadz, Mehdi and myself decided to drop a family affair 12″
The idea was simple, let’s choose a classic track and remix it. We did something like 300 copies if I remember, distributed worldwide, enough copies to pay the bill of Disco France Industrie.
It was in 2002, it was signed DROPE-NOIPSE-ZDAEF. We are in 2011 and we’re still together, making music and traveling the world, a nice family affair. This 12″ is now available on our Soundcloud, enjoy.

Max Duke – By The Way EP

Here’s some beautiful music for the morning, from new house label Delphine Records in Lille. This EP comes from Max Duke, a 29-year-old French producer, who set up the label after a Beatport top 100 with Delphine in March last year.

Lots of Nico Jaar influence here, mingling in with the minimal, deep house and tech elements of his previous records to give a full-bodied and emotive sound. Very nice for a sunny walk to work.

Woody’s Roundup: Great Escape Special

Last weekend eased us gently into a marathon summer of music and drinking in the sun. In the way that Field Day successfully curates a summer’s day, Great Escape manages to sustain the pace for three. It is one of those festivals that appears to effortlessly cherry pick the crème de la crème of future big players in the game and scatter them smoothly across a plethora of spaces.

Twin Shadow

This year was no exception, and our favourites from the hundreds of bands, DJs and artists you could have seen will form the theme of this week’s Woody’s Roundup. First up for us was Twin Shadow. Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Florida, George Lewis Jnr relocated to New York and worked at his take on 80s new-wave. This year has already seen him take the stage at Coachella festival in the States, as well as a stretch of European tour dates. If you catch him soon, keep a keen eye on the drummer; he makes the live show.

On a sunny Friday afternoon, we reluctantly squeezed into a pitch black sweaty studio to assess the live credentials of a band who have been subtlety bubbling away in blog world since last summer. Young Empires are threesome Robert Aaron Ellingson, Jake Palahnuk and Matthew Vlahovich from Toronto. They put on a lively, upbeat performance that really gets you moving; great fun and very Kitsuné. My other key observation was that their cheeky frontman doesn’t wear shoes, which in a way sums up their charisma as a band perfectly. You’ll probably have to go and see them to understand what I mean.

Ghostpoet

Now, how to describe Ghostpoet… hypnotic? Melodic? Going places? All of the above? I’ve heard the name ‘Ghostpoet’ dropped into conversation everywhere lately and he recently got a coveted Maida Vale slot on Rob Da Bank’s show – so he must be good. By far and away my favourite performance of the festival, Ghostpoet’s tone and rhythm gives a nod to the distinctive style of Maxi Jazz. In short, perhaps somewhat controversially, my feeling is that he could be this decade’s updated, grimier and dubbier answer to Faithless.

Saturday came around all too quickly and led us down the path to the depressingly named Irish alternative rock band, Funeral Suits. Now, don’t be put off by the idea of music to play in a mortuary – it’s not. Great Escape described their music as ‘a shared love of epic, distorted guitars, blistering harmonious pop, art and electronica’. As a guide, I would probably say take out the math rock rhythmic oddities of the Foals, add some more drums and turn up the bass, but keep the melodies that soar over the top of Cassius and you’re probably about there; really enjoyable and a much happier find than the rest of your “funeral suit” Google searches.

In the basement of Audio, whilst the sun was still shining, Becoming Real (a boy who has clearly grown up in a world that welcomed the beginning of dubstep) put on a best practice performance in the art of sculpting off-beat electro tracks on the spot with just a Mac, mini keyboard and a nano pad or two. He’s probably more of an acquired taste, but certainly one for fans of weird dubstep-driven electronica.

Last but by no means least, Foster the People closed the festival for us. ‘Catchy melodies and hammering basslines’ we were promised, an even bigger performance by the boys from LA we got. With enough instruments to serve an orchestra, these boys are coming to get you. I’m expecting to see them on stage at every festival this summer. It’s happy, it’s sunny and it’s got mass-appeal, but it’s not the same old story… Watch out for the lead singer’s dancing feet, they’re captivating. They do a pretty cool t-shirt too.

It was an impossibility to see everyone, but since I got back I’ve been scouring the programme for any gaps in my repertoire. I’ve got a habit of believing the hype, because more often than not it’s founded. In order to avoid short-changing you here, I’ve also made sure the likes of Little Dragon, Florrie, Black Devil Disco Club, Lone, Beat Connection, Gang Gang Dance, PolarsetsCharli XCX, The Holidays and Suuns are all represented in a ZIP too.

Edwin Congreave works it

Edwin Congreave Man of the Moment

We had the last Edwin Congreave from the Foals‘s DJ set on repeat, and it’s one of those that we still dip into when we want something that really will perk us up no matter what’s going on. So we were only too pleased to see he’s done a new one for our friends at Slutty Fringe to celebrate their party at the Old Queen’s Head in Islington tomorrow. Old Queen’s Head parties are fun and messy and that’s just how we like them.

In particular check out the final record, a VERY nice remix by some very nice remixers of a VERY nice track by a very nice band.

Flubba

Flubba is 18-year-old Aaron Lifton from New York. NYC is a good base for him as this sound is reminiscent of the Paradise Garage/The Loft era in the city, where disco was born (not that I’m old enough to have been there, you understand…)

Absolutely prolific by the looks of it, with a smooth sound well beyond his years. Enjoy.

TierkratZ – Mayday Mixtape

Ghent does it again. Michiel Van de Veire & Maarten Cocquyt are TierkratZ, and they’re here to ‘keep a room alive.’ They tell us it’s all about the art of keeping people moving, and they’ve proved themselves true to their word. They’ve been regulars on the Ghent club scene for a while now, playing at Culture Club, Decadance, Tijuana and are hosting the BangLaDecks nights. They’ve started working on early productions too, and you can listen to Vivien below.
TierkratZ – Vivien by TierkratZ

They’ve sent over their Mayday mixtape, “for those hard days on buses, trains ‘n airplaines,” and it’s a fitting example of their audio aesthetic; deep and techy with a dose of afro- tropical beats.
