VOID

Okay, okay, so hands up if you like a proper rave? All of you, good. Hands up if you like getting on a plane to Berlin just for its techno… Hands up if you like your parties underground, both physically and musically? Well, well, well, if your hand’s still up and you’re in London this Saturday, we’ve got something for you: VOID. Unlike the others, you need this void in your life! We spoke to Randolph, founder of the night, to tell you exactly why…

So Randolph, what’s your story?

I’m from Toronto, Canada and I’ve been living in London for the last 8 years.

VOID speaks of a love of techno, what are your techno creds?

To be perfectly honest with you, I don’t have a lot! I’ve been DJing over the last 5 years throughout London, but really only have taken becoming a full time producer over the last year.

That being said I’ve made great progress over the last 12 months from my productions getting recognition from Ben Klock, Raiz, and Chris Finke. Having one of my tunes played out at Berghain in Berlin has been one of the many highlights so far.

What’s VOID all about?

It might not seem so but the techno community in London is quite small.  In reality it has only several hundred dedicated followers and a hand full of nights available to artists. VOID was created for local artists who don’t ordinarily get the opportunity to truly play the music they love to the right crowd.

What can we expect on Saturday?

A very unique time! The weather forecast is expected to be a very pleasant 22c so the park and outdoor areas by Public Life are going to busy with techno heads.

In all seriousness, expect a warm and inviting crowd. Capacity is barely over 100, and the majority of people who come are into the music so it’s a party for like-minded individuals

Is it an after-party or a pre-party?

Its neither! We’re a day party!

The 1pm to 1am day slot was chosen because Public Life only has a license till 2am. It’s a very good selling point to ask someone, “Are you interested in partying in a former public toilet on Saturday afternoon?”

Tell us a little bit about the people you’ve booked to play

Production wise, Roberto is the most accomplished of the DJs playing for VOID. He recently had 3 tracks played out in Berghain and has support from artists such as Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, Raiz, Steve Rachmad.

Jaded resident Chris Stanford will also be gracing the decks and returning to his techno roots on Saturday while the smallest member of VOID, Feronia will most likely be playing the biggest tunes of the night.

Some of the most interesting acts I’m keen to introduce to the crowd is the emerging talent that will be gracing the decks during the first half of the day. Maker + Meyer who are classically trained musicians will be the thumping out Berlin’s finest techno starting at 5:30pm. Manchester’s Setaoc Mass who is the youngest of us all at just 21 will be playing at 4:00pm and so far has several productions signed to labels and has a seriously bright future ahead of him.

Ed Frost and Simon Brandreth will get things going at the beginning of the day and are seriously keen to invite the early crowd with some mean tunes right from the start.

Finally, give me three words we can associate with VOID to make us drop our day plans and get into the toilet.

Fucking. Mean. Techno.

He’s not lying. We were there for the full 12 hours back in February and the atmosphere was fantastic; dedicated music fans there for all the right reasons. Have some breakfast and get yourself down there, you won’t regret it…

You can check out the event page here for more details. There’s also a promo mix from Setaoc Mass and Randolph’s killer track to get stuck into for good measure:

Woody’s Roundup

This weekend is all about Sunday, as Secretsundaze have another of their legendary all-dayers at the Bussey Building in Peckham, with Joy Orbison. However, by no means should you rest your little dancing toes on Friday and Saturday, particularly as Catz n Dogz are in town, and that just wouldn’t be right. So tomorrow they’re having a guest-list only party in a secret East London location. You might be able to squeeze your names on if you’re quick. Tonight Big In Japan host Todd Terje at the Queen of Hoxton, and Mowgli joins Spencer Parker for Go Deeper at The Nest.

There are so many tracks at the moment that we’ve heard out and about and we’re patiently waiting for, but it seems releases are months away. Can everyone hurry up please?
New Navy – Zimbabwe New Navy have just released with the mighty Future Classic, and are tipped for big things.
Lazydisco – More Tigers (Coupons remix)
Katy B – Easy Please Me (Caspa remix) I’m adding this as a substitute for Claude Von Stroke’s Grizzl-fayah remix of this track, which is IMMENSE and out at some point in the distant future. We wait…
Hey Champ – Too Hot
Penguin Prison – Fair Warning (Goldroom Remix Dub)
Diddy Dirty Money – I Hate That You Love Me (Sinden Edit)
Junior Boys – Banana Ripple (Stay+ remix)

A notable preview this week is from the lovely Stopmakingme, teaming up with The Deadstock 33s for the Gravity EP on Tigersushi. Excellent collaborators on an excellent label, and the title track in particular is bloody great.

Punks Jump Up

PJU have been doing some sterling work for a while now, in partcular the stomping Blockhead and their mammoth remix of In Flagranti’s Worse For Wear, so I was pleased to see the latest release Chimes pt.1 is out next Friday 29 July on kleinTanz. I was even more pleased to see that remixes come from Golden Bug and Say Yes to Another Excess (the production duo of Dan Stopmakingme Avery and Danny C90s Ashenden).

Watch the video here:

They’re currently on tour playing all over Australia, so we’ll have to wait a little longer to hear them play this out and about in London town, but in the mean time here’s a Summer mixtape and a free download.

Woody’s Roundup

So it’s that wonderful time of year when Lovebox is upon us, and I’m pretty sure i’ll be ducking out of the office early for Busy Pictionary and Carte Blanche on the Ed Banger Stage and Metronomy and Beardyman on the Main Stage. And as for Sunday, most fun line-up ever?

Of course Lovebox means Lovebox afterparty, and the official soirees are at Cargo with Aeroplane on 15th and Ministry on 16th, with Seth Troxler, Alexis Raphael and Joe and Will Ask. Elsewhere Ivan Smagghe is playing at Plastic People tonight with Tim Paris under their It’s A Fine Line moniker and The Nest invites Grum and Mighty Mouse for Scandalous.

Trouble Vision comes to Corsica Studios tomorrow with dOP and Will Saul, and A-Trak joins Mumdance at XOYO. We’ll be heading to The Lock for Kill Em All with Stopmakingme and Filthy Dukes. You just can’t go wrong with a free party soundtracked by some fine electro sounds.

Here’s a few tracks we’ve been listening to this week:
Beni – It’s a Bubble (Round Table Knights Remix)
Chromeo – When the Night Falls (Hercules and Love Affair Remix)
Douster – Carajo!
Nat Self – Mr Monkey (Rachel Barton Remix)
Only Children – Don’t Stop (Hey Champ Remix)

The Disco Dictator EP

Auxiliary Tha Masterfader returns with our favourite kind of heavy-bass discso-funk on the latest release from Canada’s Homebreakin Records, entitled The Disco Dictator EP. The B-side Taxi Downtown is unashamedly dirty electro-funk, and pretty much the perfect dancefloor ingredient.

Remixes come from The Swiss’s Luke Million, and we’re pleased to see Quinten 909, adding a layer of emotion to the title track.

He’s kindly offered us a free download of the Compression Summer Domination Remix, so grab it here:

Fair Warning

Club Clique is a Friday night party held at the Mint Lounge in Manchester. After frequent accolades including Number 1 UK Club Summer 2010 and Best DJs 2011 they’ve started putting pen to paper in the form of mixtapes and re-edits. There are a lot more coming too, including remixes for Saint Etienne, The Kill Van Kulls and Glass Candy, and re-edits of Cults and D/R/U/G/S, as well as one of the infamous White Light mixes here.

They’ve reworked Pengiun Prison‘s new single Fair Warning into a emotive-funk-bass-driven beauty, and are giving it away for free.

Another beauty well worth a download is their You Can Dance remix of May68‘s Last Mile:

Cream Dream

Cream Dream is an 18-year-old who makes smooth smooth disco, in New York, where smooth smooth disco was born. His output is prolific and he’s also collaborated with Flubba on remixes and tracks including Smilin’, and a remix on the Paradiso EP, which is for download free here:

He’s got two forthcoming EPs, Coco Lovin’ – Coming July 2011 on Champange Recs: Parrot Bay Vol.1 and Lovin’ – Coming July/August 2011 on Movierecords Vol.2, so if Paradiso takes your fancy watch out for more Cream Dream this Summer.

Woody’s Roundup

Thanks to everyone that came down to Bungalow 8 last night for Meredith O’s monthly Private Parlour Party. What a dirty little sweat-fest! And so, on to the weekend…

The Nest have outdone themselves both nights, with Snap Crackle and Pop tonight featuring Julio Bashmore and Midland, and Lemonade tomorrow featuring the lovely Riton. Tonight Derrick Carter plays at Reliance Square for ‘A Private Party With…’, Fabric hosts Toddla T and Jack Beats for Jack Beats Loves, Punks Jump Up join Say Yes To Another Excess (Danny C90s and Stopmakingme) at The Baby Bathhouse in Stokey, and Lee Curtiss has his Watergate 08 release party at the Star of Kings. I’ve waited for this release for a while, especially for the lovely Maceo Plex, Fallin.
Maceo Plex – Fallin’ (live cut) by retro_

Tomorrow afternoon get yourselves down to the Queen of Hoxton for the Music & Makers Market, where DJs Pyschemagik, Stevie Kotey, Soft Rocks and Cherrystones bring their old records to play and sell. On the roof Knickerbocker Glory hosts a market and village fete, so play some games, get drunk, eat cake and buy records. Whoop!

Then Sunday our local The Lock Tavern hosts the last ever Blogger’s Delight (sob!) with Lone playing upstairs and all their friends from the last five years taking a turn. I mean, Monday mornings are never exactly fun anyway, so why not have a good Sunday to show for it? Not to be missed.

I have to admit I’m feeling a little delicate today, so here are some tracks with some piano to soothe the head, and some beats to crank it back up into Friday night.
Poolside – Do You Believe (Amen Brother Remix)
Superhumanoids – Mirrors (Cosmic Kids Remix)
Wiley – Electric Boogaloo (Riva Starr Remix)
Beni – It’s a Bubble (The Magician Remix)
Adele – Rolling in the Deep (Will Reckless Booty Remix)
Austra – Spellwork (MNDR Nighttime Remix)
Little Dragon – Ritual Union (Tensnake Remix)
