The Eskimo Twins’ 2011 Mix Up

The season of the Best of list is well and truly upon us. My iTunes has certainly benefited recently from multiple Top 2011 Albums lists and the odd gift voucher or two from distant relatives…

So, in the spirit of 2011 reflection, the lovely Eskimo Twins have sent us their fantastic End of 2011 Mix to get us up and out of the turkey haze and into the New Year party zone. It’s packed full of lovely memories and moments from a great year for electronic music. Enjoy!

Woody’s Roundup

I don’t know how it could be possible to fit any more things into the two weeks leading up to Christmas. Promoters seem to pull it out of the bag, DJs are all over the place, and even we seem to be able to be in more than one place at the same time.

Tonight is no different, but the best Christmas treat is Miguel Puente and WildKats playing at a secret location for the Hourglass records showcase. Margaret Dygas is joining the ‘secret location’ vibe, playing for Silence, and Art Department, Alexis Raphael and Ali Love are all at yet another ‘TBA’ venue for Return to the Future.

Tomorrow Village Underground hosts Andrew Weatherall and Subb-an live for 20 years of Backtobasics, and Futureboogie DJs are playing for Future Disco Christmas party at the Shacklewell Arms (sold out but tickets are available on the door).

In the mean time, here are some tracks to make a hungover Friday in the office go quicker.
Matthew Dear – Headcage
Damian Lazarus – Finding It Hard (Christmas giveaway)
Shaun Reeves – Patience (Russ Yallop Fuckabout Mix)
The Rapture – How Deep is Your Love (Cassian Mix)
Duck Sauce Vs The Loose Cannons – Barbra Christmas
James Talk vs Prince – When Doves Cry

Dirty Cash

I found this on the floor of The Warehouse Project on Saturday. Sorry to anyone who lost it, but I think it makes up for the week before when I put a coat in the cloakroom, gave them a twenty and walked off.

This little stroke of luck inspired me to listen to a bit of Dexter Kane, and here are the results.

Joey Washington & Pink Stallone – Mine (Eddie Mars Remix)

Infinity

We wrote about the collaboration between Luca C and Ali Love that spawned Infinity Ink back in November when Lee Foss included it on his Spybar DJ Mag covermount CD, and we were very excited when a certain vocally-bassy-goodness caught our ears while listening to Damien Lazarus‘s set from Burning Man this year. it seems Games isn’t the only track we can expect from the pair, although it might be a little wait on this next one Infinity, after Games was just released this week on Hot CreationsPost Summer Sampler.

Check it out at 1hr 21minutes into this excellent mix.

The C90s December mix

I’ve been sitting on this one for a couple of days and for that I apologise, as it’s really damn good. Something for everyone in there, a bit of italo, a bit of jackin’ house, a bit of hip hop, a bit of electro. The C90s monthly mixes are always something I look forward to, and this one doesn’t disappoint. December Chart Mix by TheC90s

Woody’s Roundup

So tomorrow One From The Vaults makes its last trip to the ever-epic Warehouse Project in Manchester, before they finally close the doors on Piccadilly car park on 1 January. We started going in 2008 and it’s been an absolutely amazing four years. It has completely dominated our winters – from buying a million tickets in September, to knocking off work early on a Friday to get drunk on the train on the way up, drinks in the Northern Quarter and popping to the Christmas markets beforehand (and our new love, the North Pole bar – a temporary MDF igloo serving hot boozy apple-juice-and-cinnamon cocktails, which you sip under a rug on a sofa next to a ten foot tall polar bear), checking in huge rucksacks of warm clothing for the morning (sorry door staff), then finally huddling in Manchester station from 5am – 8am for the first train to take us back home again.

Such a huge amount of effort and our friends might think we’re a bit crazy, but there are no words to describe the feeling when you walk in and you can see a flash of light and hear the bass thud from behind an archway, or exploring for the first half hour as there are so many rooms with different vibes, or how many friends we’ve made there, or how emotional it feels when someone drops an epic bassline and those lights in the main room light up everyone’s faces. All the Essential Mixes (complete with our screams embarrassingly immortalised), all the new tracks we’d never heard before, all the ridiculous conversations in the smoking area, all the after-parties including the first year where we microwaved socks and set a kitchen on fire. Of all the places we travel to for clubbing (Miami, Ibiza, Berlin) this club is by far my favourite, and I’ll be very sorry to say goodbye. Keep up the good work WHP, it’s been a pleasure.

So anyway, we’re going up there tomorrow for Rebel Rave with Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Art Department, Robert James, Damian Lazarus and TEED live, but down here there are some big ol’ knees-ups worth getting your little bums down to. Tonight The Future Now continues its strong line-ups at Egg, with Hannah Holland, Dexter Kane and Warboy, and tomorrow Warm at Bussey Warehouse is soundtracked by Pearson Sound and Ben Ufo for Hessle Audio. XOYO tomorrow has Mylo, Villa and Joakim take to the decks, and You Are We has Laura Jones and Adam Shelton at Village Underground.

Some very nice free downloads as Christmas offerings from our favourite DJs this week. Thanks in particular to Jozif and WildKats, who have been giving away an entire series of edits from their DJ sets:
Little Dragon – Crystalfilm (Close Remix)
Wolfgang – Stay And Defend (The Magician Remix)
Leftfield – Not Forgotten (Eats Everything Rework)
Jozif – Thrill Her
Josif – Rollin’
WildKats – Signs (Prince Edit)
WildKats – Whats Goin On (Daft Punk Edit)

Droplet Affection

Whether it was written inspired by these moments or to inspire them, there is no doubt that there is something spine-tinglingly Balearic about Ursa Minor’s beautifully executed debut single Droplet Affection. As Little Bear/Gabby Cooke’s stunning vocals soar over the dreamy backdrop of synthy house beats, you can’t help but be transported back to that unparalleled feeling you get as you witness the deep red sunrise of summer.

Ursa Minor are Little Bear, Yoshee, Alex and Evee. They have been getting a lot of attention across the blog world recently and they are now ready to place themselves firmly on your playlists in 2012. With a remix from the excellent Robert Owens in the pipeline and upcoming collaborations with the likes of Jozif and Mikill Pane of Manchester’s Murkage crew, it’s clear that Ursa Minor and Little Bear are no strangers to the dance world either.

They will be taking to the stage in Finsbury Park this Friday to launch the single, so get yourselves to the Silver Bullet to catch them in action at Finny P’s Ugly Xmas Jumper Party.

Droplet Affection was let loose on the world yesterday through Invader Music and it’s up for grabs here via iTunes, or here on Amazon. There’s a free stripped back version available here via Snipe London: Ursa Minor – Droplet Affection (Stripped) by snipelondon

Nat Self Winter Mix

Since June’s Dinner Party on the Moon EP it’s been interesting to see Nat Self‘s solo work continue alongside his better-known Zombie Disco Squad duo, and last week he gave us a new mix as well as a taster of his new production work. Dirtybird has already snapped up Looped Down, released 30 November, and plenty more is in the pipeline for 2012, a particular favourite being the Nat Self Romance Edit of Island by Erlend Øye‘s The Whitest Boy Alive.

You’ll find Looped Down about 13 mins into the new Winter Mix.

Eats Everything for DJ Mag

We had to interrupt this Friday’s Woody’s Roundup broadcast with a new mix from Eats Everything from our friends at DJ Mag. Two in one week, both absolutely brilliant and totally different, this one is packed full of old school house and disco and makes you want to grin at everyone (I listened to it on the tube, with consequences).
