Sean Roman’s bio tells us he’s ‘Deep North affiliated,’ which, on closer inspection, turns out to be a music collective from Toronto, running nights and recording mixes. The Deep North name suits Sean Roman’s smooth and bassy brand of deep house, peppered with sexy vocals and nostalgic plinky-plonky metallicky chimes (see Passion Crimes). Strangely enough his roots are in drum n bass, under his Mutt moniker, but you can definitely hear the garagey basslines and high-pitched vocals in tracks like Phone Call and I think that’s what tickles me the most – I feel like I’m 13 again and turning up my parents’ stereo to the likes of Artful Dodger, but it’s a guilty pleasure that’s grown up into something a bit more rounded. He’s responsible for the beautiful, epic, and much-played Sinnaman on Assembly Records last year, his track Sarah’s Song appeared on Hot Waves 2, and 2012 has already been jam packed, with two eps in 10 days; the Staring EP on Molotov21 and the latest This Thang EP on Neim.
He’s also got a side project that goes under White Lions and is often to be seen on My Favourite Robot compilations with label-mate James Teej - just listen to the bass kick in at 1min 30 on this little beauty.
