Asylum on Hawaii

I seem to share some tastes with one of my favourite DJs Thomas Koch aka DJ T; as not only did he remix one of my favourite tracks to play out, the uber-classic DJ Le Roi feat. Roland Clarke, I Get Deep, for Get Physical‘s remix package in January this year, he’s also currently working on one of my down-time favourites, the beautiful Changed by Mario & Vidis, for release later in the year.

He’s been having a break in Hawaii pre-the craziness that begins with Miami Winter Music Festival in March (we’ll be seeing him at the Get Physical party as well as some of the Electric Pickle appearances), and he’s done a little mix while he’s there. The Mario & Vidis remix is 1hr 12 minutes into the mix; the man is so smooth it’s untrue – have a listen.

The Deep North

Sean Roman’s bio tells us he’s ‘Deep North affiliated,’ which, on closer inspection, turns out to be a music collective from Toronto, running nights and recording mixes. The Deep North name suits Sean Roman’s smooth and bassy brand of deep house, peppered with sexy vocals and nostalgic plinky-plonky metallicky chimes (see Passion Crimes). Strangely enough his roots are in drum n bass, under his Mutt moniker, but you can definitely hear the garagey basslines and high-pitched vocals in tracks like Phone Call and I think that’s what tickles me the most – I feel like I’m 13 again and turning up my parents’ stereo to the likes of Artful Dodger, but it’s a guilty pleasure that’s grown up into something a bit more rounded. See what I mean:

Sean Roman – Phone Call

He’s responsible for the beautiful, epic, and much-played Sinnaman on Assembly Records last year, his track Sarah’s Song appeared on Hot Waves 2, and 2012 has already been jam packed, with two eps in 10 days; the Staring EP on Molotov21 and the latest This Thang EP on Neim.

He’s also got a side project that goes under White Lions and is often to be seen on My Favourite Robot compilations with label-mate James Teej - just listen to the bass kick in at 1min 30 on this little beauty.

Here’s a little mix to get you started, from the excellent Gotta Dance Dirty blog. Worth noting are Passion Crimes (41mins) and What I’m Missing (7mins), both on an EP coming to Miguel Campbell‘s Outcross Records in March.

Koh Tao Disco

Our friend Jay from Jac The Disco has been around the world and back in the last year or so, we’re constrantly green with envy at the latest scuba diving shot or amazing Eastern sunset, and it seems he’s been keeping a hand firmly on the decks in that time, while partner-in-crime Pac represents in London at his Legendary Children night, as well as appearances at Disco Bloodbath at XOYO.

They’re soon to be reunited, so we thought we’d pass on this little piece of paradise from the island of Koh Tao.

Coat of Arms February-March 2012 Mix

You snooze you lose, especially on something as huge as Dan Pearce (Eats Everything) and Chris James‘s collaboration Coat of Arms and their bimonthly mixtapes. I was slow off the mark on the December-January mix, so I’m going to share February-March with you while it’s fresh. So fresh, in fact, that we don’t have a tracklist yet, but I’ll add it in as soon as we get it.

See you on the dancefloor

Vaults are on the decks at The Book Club tonight from 8 – 11, and tomorrow at The Hospital Club from 8.30 – 1.30. Tomorrow’s is guestlist only, so email [email protected] if you want to do a little dancing…

The Dog & Pony Show

I’m always delighted when there’s a new Miguel Puente mix to add a bit of funk to my day in the office, and a quick flick through this one assures me it’s just as damn good as I’d expected, with tracks like the beautiful Equal Responsibilty by Climbers (7 mins in, so very very lovely), and Eliphino’s More Than Me (28 mins). Yum.

Mexa Records

There’s so much great music coming from Mexico at the moment. Louie Fresco, Miguel Puente, Climbers and Damian Uzabiaga all brought together at the legendary BPM Festival in January.

We’ve had our eyes on Louie Fresco and Jay Blakk (of Climbers)’s Mexa Records for a couple of months, and they’ve just given us something to sink our teeth into with this new promo mix, full of funk and disco all nice and bassed up.
