Coat of Arms February-March 2012 Mix

You snooze you lose, especially on something as huge as Dan Pearce (Eats Everything) and Chris James‘s collaboration Coat of Arms and their bimonthly mixtapes. I was slow off the mark on the December-January mix, so I’m going to share February-March with you while it’s fresh. So fresh, in fact, that we don’t have a tracklist yet, but I’ll add it in as soon as we get it.

The Dog & Pony Show

I’m always delighted when there’s a new Miguel Puente mix to add a bit of funk to my day in the office, and a quick flick through this one assures me it’s just as damn good as I’d expected, with tracks like the beautiful Equal Responsibilty by Climbers (7 mins in, so very very lovely), and Eliphino’s More Than Me (28 mins). Yum.

Mexa Records

There’s so much great music coming from Mexico at the moment. Louie Fresco, Miguel Puente, Climbers and Damian Uzabiaga all brought together at the legendary BPM Festival in January.

We’ve had our eyes on Louie Fresco and Jay Blakk (of Climbers)’s Mexa Records for a couple of months, and they’ve just given us something to sink our teeth into with this new promo mix, full of funk and disco all nice and bassed up.

Alexis Raphael Ibiza Voice Podcast

What a lovely build – starting off with the smooth and sexy that we’ve come to expect from Alexis Raphael, then ending with some hardcore thumping that’ll warm you up this frosty February.

Sadly no tracklist at the moment but that’s probably because it’s chocka block with unreleased exclusives that we might have to wait for a while for.

Droog and Russ Yallop Live @ Rebel Rave

There are so many things that are just so right about this mix before even the first listen:
1. It’s Russ Yallop
2. It’s Culprit head honcho trio Droog
3. It’s at one of the legendary Rebel Raves
4. It’s in Peru, so it would have been a beautiful sunny party on top of being very cool.

Then read the comments on the soundcloud link and everyone’s identifying all the tracks that tick my boxes (not in order of appearance):
1. ClimbersAll Right about 34 minutes in (Culprit give a release date of April in the comments too)
2 RaffaFLHot For You (the original – also watch out for the Climbers remix)
3. Eats EverythingLo To Hi, 43 minutes in. We’ve been waiting to get our mitts on this for so long…
4. Russ’s remix of Oskar Offermann - Fluffer which is EVERYWHERE right now

And last but so utterly not least, I was unaware that Russ has also remixed our teenage dance anthem Fish Go Deep‘s The Cure and the Cause. Oh the memories! Hear it 1hr in.
The man can basically do no wrong at the moment… Watch out for the sound though, it is live so it’s not 100%.

Januari

Jonas Rathsman was responsible for the mighty Tobago on French Express at the very end of last year; one of the best EPs I’ve heard in a long time, one where both tracks (Feeling You on the B side) were an absolute delight and expertly trod the ground between disco and deep house.

His mixing doesn’t disappoint either, and this little beauty is packed full of my favourites; from Hot Since 82‘s Let It Ride to Jesse Perez‘s Slanging That D. You can hear Feeling You in there too. Enjoy.

Good Children Make Bad Grown Ups

Kornél Kovács @Marie Laveau 02/09/2011 (www.levepr.com)

Kornél Kovács is one of the three driving forces behind the Swedish Studio Barnhus label, alongside the excellent Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist. Last year was the real breakthrough year for the trio, with Axel Boman signing his Nattsud EP to Jesse Rose’s digital imprint Play It Down, dropping two well-received EPs (Europa and BARN 003) on his own Studio Barnhus label and his 2010 hit Purple Drank (Pampa Records) being played everywhere by everyone. In addition, Kornél Kovács released his name-making solo hit Down Since ’92 in October, a Studio Barnhus follow-up to his 2010 debut Baby Step.

Studio Barnhus has been releasing records since October 2010 when they launched with a joint EP, Good Children Make Bad Grown Ups (which featured Baby Step and Axel Boman’s Modern Fluids). Releases quickly followed with EPs from Shakarchi & Straneus, Acid Andy, Ex-Pylon, HNNY, Jesper Dahlback and, most recently, Radioactive Orchestra (a unique Axel Boman collaboration with nuclear physicists, Bo Cederwall and Torbjorn Back, and media artist Kristofer Hagbard, based on musical algorithms and models of radiation emitted from various isotopes!).

As is often the case these days, their sound is somewhat indefinable; another reason why Kornél Kovács’ new mix for DJB is well worth a listen. From the man who regularly uses samples from his childhood Casio keyboard, this mix takes on a well-worked fusion of two-step, acid, Detroit, his cheeky Swedish personality and everything in between…

  2. Willie Burns – ‘Windows Down’ (Crème Organization)
  3. STL – ‘Death Proof’ (Something)

  5. Knowing Looks – ‘Listen to My 45’ (WNCL)
  6. Bjørn Torske – ‘Langt Fra Afrika (Todd Terje’s Enda Lengre Miks) (Fra Afrika Altså)’ (Smalltown Supersound)
  7. Mu – ‘Let’s Get Sick’ (Output)
  8. Neil Landstrumm – ‘DS Attack’ (Peacefrog)
  9. Marcus Mixx – ‘U Blow Girl (Mouth Mix)’ (Unknown To The Unknown)
  10. Funkineven – ‘Iron Cloud’ (Apron)
  11. I:Cube – ‘Transpiration’ (Versatile)
  12. KiNK featuring Rachel Row – ‘Freakuency’ (Sharivari)
  13. Mary J Blige – ‘Searching For Some Real Love (Jacques Renault Edit)’ (On The Prowl)

  16. Scala & Kolacny Brothers – I Touch Myself (PIAS)

Noir Recommends

Oooh, there’s so much goodness packed into this 1 1/2 podcast from the great man Noir. I’ve been waiting to hear Russ Yallop‘s remix of Louie Fresco‘s So Good since it rocked the Hot Natured party on New Year’s Day as well as the haunting Hot Since 82 remix of Toky’s About You, H.O.S.H‘s What Do You Want Me To Say, due February on Diynamic and as for Tevo Howard & Tracey Thorn - Without Me (Noir & Martin Thompson Remix) Tracey’s dulcit tones are always a pleasure.

Noir also includes mystery Mexican duo Climbers, who I’ve been trying to find information about for a while now, since Cozzy D included Equal Responsibility on his Aphrodepth December 2011 mix (see 1hr 19 minutes in) and I played it to Emily about 17 times on repeat. It turns out theirs is the next EP forthcoming on Culprit, Losing You. Also worth a listen is their forthcoming remix of Raffa L‘s Hot For You. Nice.
