This week we’re getting it all for free, free tracks, free parties, with free line-ups that will blow your mind. This begins in earnest tonight, with the most ridiculous list of names ever – check out the flyer:
I mean hell-the-fuck-ohhhhh! The venue only holds 400, and you’re seeing Justice for free, so it will possibly be the most squished you’ve ever been in your whole life. I suggest getting down there about now and setting up camp.
After you’ve unfolded yourself, have a quick nap because you aren’t going to sleep for a while. It’s Fabric 12th birthday and to celebrate they’re putting on one of the legendary On and On…and On parties. It starts at 11pm Saturday and ends 5am on Monday morning. The line-up includes Ricardo Villalobos, Moodymann, Margaret Dygas, Lee Foss, Maya Jane Coles, Pearson Sound and Space Dimension Controller, so it’s a pretty special birthday. Woo!
There was a time when all the Waifs & Strays releases were relegated to the annoying ‘not out for ages’ list. But it seems ‘ages’ is upon us; after the release of Be Patient last week on Bristol label Futureboogie, now Body Shiver is here. We first heard it on Jamie Jones‘s Fabric 59, and it’s fitting that his Hot Creations label should be the ones to release it, with the B sides Eat Into My Soul and a Jamie Jones/Lee Foss Hot Natured remix of the title track. A very nice vinyl package – buy it here.
Phonica is 8! And to celebrate tomorrow they’re commandeering our favourite car park, Great Suffolk Street, with a lineup that defies belief; Heidi, Soul Clap, Matt Tolfrey, Joy Orbison, Waifs & Strays, Benoit & Sergio live, and not to forget the mighty Visionquest. Obviously we’ll be the ones down the front screaming like idiots. If that hasn’t broken you there’s an after-party at Cable until 1pm on Sunday hosted by Jaded.
The sun is upon us at last, so perfect timing to head to Peckham tonight for the closing party of Bold Tendencies on the roof of the multiplex car park, with the obligatory Bussey Building after party, with Horse Meat Disco and the Off Modern crew.
Please, sunshine, please last until Sunday, pleeeeeeease?! We’re pretty excited about Creche’s Outdoor Music roof party at the Brickhouse in Brick Lane, Miguel Campbell and Alexis Raphael are gonna play some smooth beats and I can’t wait. Staying on a Sunday theme, Secretsundaze have their ’10 years of’ closing party at Village Underground.
Tonight Basing House continues its rise through the venue ranks, hosting Midland for Gotwood, while Prins Thomas plays a 3 hour set at East Village for Marketing Music, and Jamie XX plays at XOYO for the first part of their 1st birthday celebrations.
Tomorrow there’s a Krankbrother Terrace party with Nick Curly and MANIK (I’ve wanted to see him for tiiiime) but it’s legendary, and therefore sold out, with no tickets on the door as far as I know. XOYO birthday part 2 sees Juan Atkins and xxxy take to the decks, and it’s Ministry of Sound’s 20th birthday, with Joe and Will Ask, Alexis Raphael, Nic Fanciulli and Dennis Ferrer.
And finally One From The Vaults, one of countless special records from a very special man. Our thoughts are with Henry, Pedro, Fafi and all the Ed Banger crew at this sad time.
If you’ve ever frequented the dingy indie clubs of London town in recent years, I have no doubt that you will have seen these boys grace the stage in one of their previous guises. Their energy and sound has always been exciting. Their unique ability to get a new crowd singing along to their intelligently crafted and catchy hooks has never ceased to amaze me. They have an enviable knack of producing music that you love enough to believe, right there and then, that you’ve heard it a hundred times before. There is always an overwhelming sense of intrigue in the room and it is always complimented by a feeling that there are bigger things to come.
Now embracing all things electronic, I am excited to introduce you to their new project Enfant. They’re already creating a buzz on the scene, so we wanted to hear what’s what from them. They kindly offered us an exclusive interview and here’s what they had to say…
Introduce yourselves in your own words
We are an electronic music trio made up of twin brothers Robin and Ali Owen and Ed Ellis. Enfant only started this summer – but we all know each other from playing in previous bands together. We can’t really tell you who does what as we’re not really sure anymore; everyone writes and everyone plays. It’s a great way to work because you take the egos out and you come up with something that’s unique between the three of you.
What’s your sound and what’s coming up?
We’re definitely electronic and love combining pumped up bass lines with interesting melodies and big choruses. We’ve got several tracks in the pipeline that cover a few different musical bases; some are a bit darker, some more dance focussed and then some you can sing along to. We’re also into our electro, house and techno and will be exploring these sides of us. There are a lot of tracks that we know we want to make which will be different but shouldn’t alienate people who were into these first few tracks; we think that’s a really exciting place to be. We’re also working on a couple of remixes that will be available soon.
Can you tell us a little bit about your first single Waking Up the Sun? What’s the story behind it?
Waking Up The Sun is pure hedonism. It’s about letting go of the rigmarole of life and just saying f**k it, life’s not about work, money or responsibilities. We want the song to bring out the memories of those nights/weekends/weeks we’ve all had (or we hope you’ve had) where nothing else mattered apart from the here and now. For us it’s London, Glastonbury, Ibiza and many more. We’re just in the process of shooting the video for this track, so stay tuned for that too.
We’re DJing around London at the moment and our live show is coming very soon. We all come from backgrounds of playing in bands so we’re taking our music to the stage in a way electronic music often isn’t. We grew up playing live and it’s where we feel most comfortable.
If we see you at the bar, what will yours be?
We’ll be having a lager, a Guinness and a Bourbon. Robin has a bizarre allergy to lager and Ed can’t go a day without whiskey!
Hot Creations have done themselves proud with the latest EP Baby I Got It from Miguel Campbell. We were lucky enough to catch him live at Zoo Project in Ibiza and Baby I Got It and Something Special sounded amazing. They are both the utter distilled essence of pure sun-filled nostalgic house and I can’t get enough. I’m excited about the Richy Ahmed remix too – in fact, this is pretty much Hot Creations gold from start to finish. Out today digitally and on vinyl 20 September.
Have a listen:
Now go see him play at Creche, Sunday 18 September at the Brickhouse in Brick Lane. Sunday party – whoop!
…As Sampson sent us through his Summer jam, the sweet-sounding Suga, and as I stare out of the window into the blustering wind, driving rain and hellish darkness I’m very glad of a jam to feel like summer again. This is smooth and sunny and I like it.
He’s 24, living and studying out in Geneva, and producing House and other electronic music since 2010. There are more free downloads on his Soundcloud page including a very nice rework of Daft Punk‘s Revolution 909. There’s an EP on its way, Sans Success Sans Excess Sans Sex, so expect more from him in the coming months.
Hi all! I feel battered and bruised from a bit of a hefty schedule these last couple of weeks, but normal service has resumed, so it is with pleasure that I bring you Woody’s Roundup.
The Magician is finally releasing his first solo ep, with Danish singer Jeppe Laursen, called I Don’t Know What To Do, and out on Kitsuné 3 October.
We’ve been knowing-and-loving Stephen Fasano’s Magic Tapes series for a year now, since he left Aeroplane, and he’s also been responsible for some pretty hefty indie-dance remixes, not least, Lykke Li‘s I Follow Rivers, Yuksek‘s On A Train, and partnering with Yuksek on Peter and The Magician’s Twist.
