Russ Yallop Pulse Radio Podcast

The Hot Natured New Year’s Day party at new superclub Pulse in Blackfriars was everything we’d come to expect – a sunny sunny vibe (complete with rainbow lasers and plastic palm trees) despite the January chill outside and a line up to blow your socks off. Miguel Campbell, Maceo Plex, Richy Ahmed, Art Department, Robert James and ending with Lee Foss and Jamie Jones as Hot Natured with Ali Love on vocals.

One of the standout sets was an early one by Russ Yallop, and this podcast has been helping me to re-live some of the highlights of the night, complete with heavy basslines and some storming edits of the likes of Donna Summer (Yallop’s remix of Louie Fresco‘s So Good, forthcoming on the excellent No.19 music). Guaranteed to blow the cobwebs away.

Infinity

We wrote about the collaboration between Luca C and Ali Love that spawned Infinity Ink back in November when Lee Foss included it on his Spybar DJ Mag covermount CD, and we were very excited when a certain vocally-bassy-goodness caught our ears while listening to Damien Lazarus‘s set from Burning Man this year. it seems Games isn’t the only track we can expect from the pair, although it might be a little wait on this next one Infinity, after Games was just released this week on Hot CreationsPost Summer Sampler.

Check it out at 1hr 21minutes into this excellent mix.

Beep Dee

This month’s DJ mag’s cover-mount CD was uh-mazing, slightly less for the mixing than this man’s unrivaled ability to find and produce the best new music out there. Spybar Chicago presents Lee Foss, and among recent favourites such as Infinity Inc (Ali Love and Luca C)’s Games, was nestled Beep Dee‘s Sensations.

Beep Dee’s track Colorado was a highlight of Lee’s Hot Waves 001 compilation too, and it seems the young Brazilian, real name Cesar Werlon, is going to be someone to watch in the near future.

Hot Natured

I like my house music to creep up on me a little bit. A muffled instrument, a sample floating on a breeze, all somehow nostalgic whilst being completely original. That is Lee Foss.

Like a metaphorical milk tray man, Lee Foss beguiles you with melody until he drops a bassline that stabs you in the heart. He’s never let me down, first with The Edge EP on Culprit in November 2009, U Got Me on Hot Creations in 2010, and Your Turn Girl in February this year back with Culprit (which he helped launch alongside friends Droog).

Foss’s rise through the ranks to production king started with promotion and Djing local Chicago parties, through residencies at Avalon and the Culprit Rooftop parties at The Standard to playing the infamous Wolf + Lamb Marcy Hotel parties in New York, and Miami WMC 2009, which has the tendency to throw people to stardom, especially after a legendary performance at the Crosstown Rebels party (God I wish we were going this year). Alongside this, he contributed regular podcasts to Ibiza Voice, which became known globally.

He’s an island-hopping international, having grown up in Chicago, then moving to L.A., and via a three year extended visit to Ibiza, now spends half his time in London, working with good friend Jamie Jones. This collaboration as Hot Natured has given birth to the h.e.a.d.s. EP on Culprit in June 2009, the fantastic re-rub Hot Natured Edits (their takes on MGMT‘s Electric Feel: Jones’s contribution Electric Jones and Foss’s Leectric Feel) on Wolf + Lamb Black and the Equilibrium EP in June 2010. They’ve also made themselves a record label: Hot Creations, releasing Lee and Jamie’s productions, alongside signings Robert James and Clockwork, whose It’s You Again EP was described by Resident Advisor as ‘sex music.’ Another hugely fantastic collaboration is the teaming up of Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Robert James and FB Julian as Pteradactil Disco, releasing the Big Ass Biscuit/Clive’s Alright EP on Hot Creations in January 2011, and there’s yet another moniker: Modern Amusement, a name he’s used this month to release the Cold As Ice EP on Jonny White from Art Department‘s No.19 music. April will see the release of the next Hot Natured EP Forward Motion Feat Ali Love, and there’s also another label in the pipeline, Hot Waves, which will launch quarterly compilations.

If any of you lucky bods are in Miami this year catch Lee playing at our favourite the Electric Pickle (chilled vibes in the garden, sweaty disco upstairs) on 26th and 27th March, and he’s playing his first London gig of 2011 on Sunday (!) 3 April for Creche at Queen of Hoxton.

He’s working on a solo album for release later this year, and there are a number of podcasts to keep you going until then, including the most recent from Hot Natured:

Or try a classic: Lee Foss live at The Marcy, September 2009, Wolf + Lamb Radio

Worth a note: the beautiful Warriors from the Your Turn Girl EP has a familiar sample, which I’m ashamed to say I remember from Jean Jacques Smoothie‘s 2001 Two People, but which originally comes from the 1975 Minnie Ripperton’s Inside My Love. See how pretty?

Woody’s Roundup

Emily and I like to pepper our office Outlook calendars with clubbing plans so that we don’t feel too all-work-and-no-play. Consequently both Outlook calendars popped up with a little message this morning reminding us both to ‘Kill Em All.’ Now I work at Tate Gallery and Emily works for the government, so I’d say that was a pretty serious threat to national security.

Fabric tonight has a killer line-up and everyone’s involved. Just look at that flyer – they could barely fit all the names on! So we’ll see you at the front. Try and pop into Queen of Hoxton too for That Mixmag Thing #5 as these free parties go from strength to strength (kudos on the dressing-up box last time) and ooooh, they’ve got Matt Tolfrey playing upstairs while Mighty Mouse and The Magician spin those disco decks downstairs.

Tomorrow there’s another flyer struggling to fit all their guests’ names on: Chew The Fat!‘s 13th birthday at Cable. Just look at them all – Surkin, Yolanda Be Cool, Tony Senghore, Foamo… Festival-wise, Offset in Hainault Park sees two days of debauchery, including Trailer Trash’s mucky little Miami Beach Party spanning Saturday and Sunday with Ali Love, Stopmakingme, Rory Phillips and Riotous Rockers.

We’ll all sleep when we’re dead, yeah?

Wolf Gang – The King And All Of His Men (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Remix)
Aloe Blacc – I Need a Dollar (Oliver $ Edit)
Zombie Disco Squad – Hobo
Filthy Dukes – Nonsense In The Dark (C90s Remix)
Cajmere – Percolator (Claude Vonstroke Remix)
Mark Ronson & The Business Intl – The Bike Song (feat. Kyle Falconer and Spank Rock)
Cassius – I ♥ U So (beautiful and epic – I’m excited about the new Rawkers EP on Ed Banger)

Woody’s Roundup

What a week, we were looking to the weekend for a rest! There’s no rest for the wicked though. This weekend’s clubbing sees Riva Starr and Hannah Holland over at East Village, Basement Jaxx at Jamm, Brixton and Moshi Moshi Records take over Bloomsbury Bowl tonight. Tomorrow you can catch up with Nelski over at Plan B, James Blake at The Rhythm Factory, and, for those who can’t make it to Space this summer, We Love are throwing one of their oh-so-special parties over at Ministry of Sound, showcasing talent such as DJ Hell, the fantastic 2020 SoundsystemRalph Lawson and Paul Woolford. If you’ve still got anything left after that, Ketoloco have invited Ilario Alicante for their Sunday Summer Special at The Light Bar.

Sunshine songs and a bit of fun are always welcome when a rare extended bout of summer comes along. So, included in our happy selection today, we have a remix of a track from drummer, guitarist and songwriter Florrie which features on the forthcoming Kitsuné x Ponystep compilation (released on Monday). On the tracklist is a band you may have noticed us keeping a close eye on, MAY68 (My Ways is sandwiched neatly inbetween Lo-Fi-Fnk and David E. Sugar). Which links seamlessly to MAY68 at Koko tonight. We’ll be heading down to Club NME to catch them still buzzing off a week of media frenzy, following their performance on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury last weekend.

Don’t Turn The Lights On

A group of people cluster on the corner of City Road and Featherstone Street, drinking and chattering excitedly. The uniform is hi top trainers and white tees, and the atmosphere is expectant in the muggy heat. A man walks through the crowd and up to the bar, largely unnoticed, despite rising a head taller than most. What really sets him apart is how sharply dressed he is. Smooth in black leather jacket, wayfarers and mahogany loafers, pale skinned and dark haired, he is immensely striking.

This man is Dave Macklovitch AKA Dave 1, and the occasion is Chromeo at The City Arts and Music Project (the CAMP), their only non-festival UK date on the Business Casual world tour (they played Glastonbury last week and they’re playing Lovebox on 18 July) before the album of the same name drops in August. I can only imagine the contrast between tonight’s gig and last weekend’s Dance West Stage as we descend the stairs from the bar to the basement, the intimate setting with its stripped back features making us feel a little like we’re in on a well-kept secret.

Dave 1 and P-Thugg take to the stage amid the Chromeo Intro chant from the crowd, which bounces off the low ceilings as the coloured LED panels take us back to the very best New York 80s discotheque. They announce Needy Girl with, ‘this is for everyone who’s followed us from day one,’ and the cheer that goes up gives us goosebumps as everyone there knows what’s coming. With huge smiles we all sing along to Momma’s Boy, and new single Don’t Turn The Lights On slows the tempo and dims the lights, and the crowd gets a little bit sexy.

A few hours later we emerge into the night air, unsure of which decade we’re in, and feeling a long way from the bustle of Old Street roundabout. It feels like Dave and Pee are friends of ours who’ve shared a little bit of their musical history tonight. I can’t wait to descend the basement steps again.

The CAMP in July is one to watch as they’re coaxing in more big names, including Ali Love next Tuesday and Roska‘s Kicks and Snares label launch 10 July. See you on the dancefloor!

Mad March

March mixes are coming thick, fast, and fantastic.

Here’s our third – the mighty Tronik Youth. Ever since the creation of possibly the best record of all time: the Tronik Youth remix of Late of the Pier’s Bathroom Gurgle, Neil Parnell has been dubbed by One From The Vaults as the King of the Remix. His italo-disco takes on the greats such as Ali Love and The Gossip firmly established him in our hearts, and his own latest EP Past Life was released on Hottwerk in December 2009.

This mix doesn’t disappoint, with a hefty helping of cow bells, pianos and rolling beats. I’m excited to see Bottin and Rodion in the track list, in time for the release of Galli on Eskimo Recordings on 22 March.

Tronik Youth March Mix

8 Headman – Private Show (Tape to Tape Mix 1)

17 Yeasayer – O.N.E (XXXChange Remix)
18 Groove Armada – Paper Romance (Classixx Mix)

I highly recommend January and February’s mixes too, anyone who ends their mix with Hall & Oates’s I Can’t Go For That is a winner in my book.
