Woody’s Roundup

This weekend is all about Sunday, as Secretsundaze have another of their legendary all-dayers at the Bussey Building in Peckham, with Joy Orbison. However, by no means should you rest your little dancing toes on Friday and Saturday, particularly as Catz n Dogz are in town, and that just wouldn’t be right. So tomorrow they’re having a guest-list only party in a secret East London location. You might be able to squeeze your names on if you’re quick. Tonight Big In Japan host Todd Terje at the Queen of Hoxton, and Mowgli joins Spencer Parker for Go Deeper at The Nest.

There are so many tracks at the moment that we’ve heard out and about and we’re patiently waiting for, but it seems releases are months away. Can everyone hurry up please?
New Navy – Zimbabwe New Navy have just released with the mighty Future Classic, and are tipped for big things.
Lazydisco – More Tigers (Coupons remix)
Katy B – Easy Please Me (Caspa remix) I’m adding this as a substitute for Claude Von Stroke’s Grizzl-fayah remix of this track, which is IMMENSE and out at some point in the distant future. We wait…
Hey Champ – Too Hot
Penguin Prison – Fair Warning (Goldroom Remix Dub)
Diddy Dirty Money – I Hate That You Love Me (Sinden Edit)
Junior Boys – Banana Ripple (Stay+ remix)
All together: Woody 55.zip

A notable preview this week is from the lovely Stopmakingme, teaming up with The Deadstock 33s for the Gravity EP on Tigersushi. Excellent collaborators on an excellent label, and the title track in particular is bloody great.

Happy Birthday Your Majesty

It’s the Queen’s birthday this weekend. The Queen of Hoxton, that is. And she’s celebrating in style, with a birthday party on Saturday 5th March after a week of events (Friday 4th March sees Stanton Warriors play in the basement for That Mixmag Thing #11). 70s disco legends Odyssey are making a rare live appearance in the basement, alongside Big In Japan‘s Dan Spinney (Capita!) and Jay Karim, Cosmic Boogie, Yamwho? and the king of the edit Leftside Wobble.

We’ve got two guest list tickets to give away, email [email protected] and the earliest birds will receive an email from the Queen of Hoxton.

Legendary Children

Since our good friend Jay Rossi of Jac The Disco went on his travels we’ve been chatting to his partner-in-crime Prince Pac about his solo projects for Legendary Children and Big In Japan. Legendary Children began as a blog and a series of club nights ‘all about classic House Music’ in Stoke Newington a whole year ago, and since then they’ve branched out all over East London and sent Pac DJing around the capital. They’re about to celebrate their first birthday with a huge secret venue warehouse party Saturday 5 March (event details here), so Pac did a little mix to celebrate. Full of smooth disco and acid house, very nice.

Pac’s also playing this friday alongside Ray Mang for Big In Japan at the Book Club. We’ve been keeping a close eye on Big In Japan since they hosted Fabric‘s room 3 for Kill Em All last month, and this mix sums up the disco vibes we can expect this weekend. Enjoy.

Kill Em All! Kill Em All! Kill. Em. All.

Yup, it’s Kill Em All tonight at Fabric, and everyone’s who’s anyone is on the bill. Erol, Filthy Dukes, Django Django live… Yes please! I love those butterflies in the stomach on a Friday when it’s hard to concentrate on work. Bournemouth’s Big In Japan are hosting room three and resident Tosh Ohta has given us a little taster mix, which he tells us was mixed live in using two 1210s, a CDJ1000 Mk1, a DJM600 mixer, 17 records and one CD, and which I’ve been loving this week.

On Saturday it’s well worth braving the cold to head to XOYO for Snap Crackle and Pop, soundtracked by Zombie Disco Squad, Deepgroove and Joe and Will Ask. I’ve always enjoyed Snap Crackle and Pop nights, they always seem to turn out to be a whole heap of silly fun.

Leftside Wobble

While we were at the Warehouse Project this weekend our southern compatriots weren’t left entirely on the sidelines as they moved to the smooth grooves of Leftside Wobble at the Book Club for Big In Japan.

Leftside Wobble seems to be something of an online phenomenon, releasing disco edits mainly for free (although also releasing on Disco Deviance, AutoDiscoteque and Kojak Giant Sounds), earning himself 100,000 downloads and being followed by everyone on Soundcloud. He’s actually been playing for 20 years as Jonathan Moore, including a stint at Paul Oakenfold’s legendary Project Club at Ziggy’s in South London, so I’d say he was in a pretty good position to provide a commentary on Acid House for us.

The title of this mixtape is Acid Soul, and is described by the man himself as “music that’s deep and raw yet still oozes funk and soul.” Capturing the spirit of Chicago House and mixing it with his own edits and more contemporary takes from the likes of Hard Ton and Hercules and Love Affair. Very nice indeed.

Woody’s Roundup

A huge thank you to everyone who came down to Public Life last night for our evening with our friends at Brilliantine, and to The C90s, who had us up on the ledges where we belong. Much fun!

So here we are about to start the first proper Autumnal-feeling weekend, and this can only mean one thing: THE WAREHOUSE PROJECT!!!!! Yes, it’s that time of year, and we’re off to Manchester, and tonight in charge of the decks we have Joris Voorn, Steve Lawler and Adam Beyer, Jamie Jones, Wolf + Lamb, Joy Orbison and Krysko.

Back within the M25 there are car parks and lofts to choose from. Tomorrow Adam Beyer invites Chris Leibing and other guests from his DRUMCODE label to Ewer Street car park, and the Electric Minds crew are throwing another secret venue loft party featuring Marcus Worgull and Christopher Rau. I hear good rumblings about these parties and they’ve got a few coming up, including the next on 30 October, so try to get yourselves down to one or two. Tonight Big in Japan take over The Book Club with Leftside Wobble and Jac The Disco‘s Prince Pac. Always a nice vibe and a fun venue for after work dancing.

In anticipation of our journey into the underbelly of Manchester’s arches for another weekend spent in a car park, I’m going a little dark with our tracks this week.
