Woody’s Roundup

Oh Fabric, you spoil us! Sweet Jesus this is a pretty line-up. If I were in London tonight there would be absolutely no question where I’d be (although Style of Eye is at The Nest and there is a Christmas offering from consistently superb party-kids Off Modern at the new Peckham Hotel), but our little rave-team is travelling to Manchester for the mighty Warehouse Project once again, to see our favourites Bowski, Fake Blood, Erol, Jacques Lu Cont and Boy 8-Bit.

December weekends have sweeeet DJs playing all over our fair city. Tomorrow there’s a Numbers warehouse party with Jamie XX, Steve Lawler‘s at Hearn Street Car Park for Onemore birthday, The Revenge is adding some disco goodness to the Horse and Groom, Shaun Reeves, Clockwork and Thugfucker are playing at Fabric, Hey Today! Are at Queen of Hoxton for Orlando Boom.

Sunday The Lock are proving themselves legendary once again, with Fake Blood, Riton

Bowski Winter Mix

We’ve been writing this blog for two-and-a-half years now so hopefully you might have a bit of an understanding of what artists we just implicitly trust, and which ones never fail us. So much so that when they do a new mix we post it, and you download it. You don’t even really need any words from me. Bowski is one of them.

Woody’s Roundup

Friday hangover part II, after the legendary Bowski took to the decks last night at The Russian Bar for Joe and Will Ask‘s Vikings 004. If you’ve not been to a Vikings night yet then absolutely get yourselves down to the next one (watch this space for details next month). The energy in Joe and Will Ask sets mingles happy-go-lucky bouncy beats with grinding electronic basslines, and the atmosphere is one of a great house party: friends catch up and dance with infectious smiles. I’ve been waiting to see Bowski play ever since we first wrote about him last April, and he’s still got that ability to truly surprise people. My favourite thing in the whole world is a night where I have homework afterwards – the obsessive tracking down (often with very little to go on other than a hummed melody; after all, there’s only so many tracks in a night that you can pester the DJ for the name of) of new tracks that blow my mind. Thankfully, one that we did ask about was his remix of Cassius I Love U So, part of the new remixes EP on Ed Banger. It’s a beaut.

This all ties in rather nicely to events this weekend, as The Fat! Club are giving away the Bowski remix of Boy 8-Bit’s The Keep to celebrate Boy 8-Bit’s appearance at Chew the Fat! at Cable tomorrow, alongside the mighty Zinc. I see a rooooooaaadddddbbbblooocccckkkk….There’s an exclusive interview with the Boy himself here.

Boy 8-Bit – The Keep (Bowksi Remix)

Also tomorrow is Bugged Out! at XOYO with Matt Walsh and Boys Noize, and Cafe 1001 on Brick Lane has a live appearance from Solomun and Stimming for Holic’s 4th Birthday.Tonight Ray Mang and Pac hit up the east end at Big in Japan at The Book Club, and Warm host Joakim at Plastic People. Apocalypso at Queen of Hoxton sees Dekker (Dekker’s twin-peaks-sampling Stop is still KILLING it on all dancefloors – demo preview here).

Hopefully it’s near enough to pay day to indulge in a little disco dalliance this weekend. See you on the dancefloor.

Arveene & Misk – Love & Lust
Holy Ghost! – Do It Again
Headman – Voices (Hannulelauri Dub)
Lissie – When I’m Alone With You (Tensnake Edit)
Firefox AK – Boom Boom Boom (James Curd Remix)
Spec – Prince vs Booka Shade
Juan Atkins – Dayshift (Oliver’s Nightshift Remix)

Woody 41.Zip

Bonus track (there’s a lot of gooduns out this week): Adele – Rolling in the Deep (Villa Remix)

Talkbox on Blood

It always made perfect sense that Fake Blood was a champion of Bowski, as the two share those techy bleeps and chilling bass crescendoes. So we were pleased to see that Bowski’s Talkbox/Leggings EP was just released on Fake Blood’s label Blood Music, the second EP and follow up to the excellent Clouds Liquid/Mauful Sir in September.

You can stream Talkbox below, and listen to Leggings in Bowski’s episode for the Wax:On Podcast from last Friday in Leeds. I’ve played this three times in a row and I still can’t get enough. I mean, the Pleasurekraft remix of La La Land? YES!

Talkbox- BLOOD MUSIC 02 by Bowski

Woody’s Roundup

It’s that first-of-the-month syndrome where everyone decides to put on a night, and when you combine that with the back-to-school, freezing-cold, if-we-keep-dancing-maybe-winter-will-go-away feeling, the results are pretty explosive.

Sooo, tonight is that Mixmag Thing #6, with The 2 Bears and James Priestley all for free at the Queen of Hoxton, and tomorrow there’s about ten things to go to, including Neon Noise Project at XOYO with We Have Band, Surkin, Feadz, Tronik Youth, Punks Jump Up and The C90s. Annie Mac Presents sees Fake Blood, Monarchy and Aeroplane at Koko, but this is sold out so watch out if you’re just planning on turning up. At Corsica Studios we have Phonica’s 7th Birthday, featuring Virgo, Four Tet and Henrik Schwarz, and last but not least, our Eastside favourites Public House, bring Jef K to Drop East in Commercial Street. It’s hard to describe the energy at these parties, so you should really experience it for yourselves.

Lots of notable tracks floating around this week, not to mention new albums, so this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Bot ‘Ox – Blue Steel (Still Going remix)
Barclay James Harvest – Love on The Line (Mustang Re-Dit)
Pleasurekraft – Tarantula
Yelle – La Musique (Lorenz Rhode Remix) – released on Kitsuné on Monday.
Crookers feat. Roisin Murphy – Royal T (Blamma! Blamma! Remix)
Boys Noize – Yeah
Caribou – Sun (Bowski remix) – another great remix from Bowski, just adding the little bit of oomph that this track needed.

Bonus (go BUY the Aeroplane album, it sounds like this):
Aeroplane feat. Jonathan Jeremiah – Good Riddance

Also worth your pennies: the excellent self-titled Bag Raiders album is out today on Modular, and over on Eskimo Recordings, Bottin‘s new Democracy/August EP is out on Monday. Treat yourselves.

Track for the Day

Friend-of-the-blog and Wax:On DJ Bowski has been finishing his new EP, so while he’s been in the studio he’s been so kind as to pop over his mix of Booka Shade‘s Regenerate. This remix has Bowski’s instantly-recognisable stamp all over it, and watch this space for more tracks and mixes later in the Summer. Also a timely reminder that Booka Shade’s new album More was released on Get Physical on 3 May.

Booka Shade – Regenerate (Bowski Remix)
