Woody’s Roundup

It’s finally June! Time for holidays, festivals, more sun and even more booze… Find your tents and pack your sunglasses; summer has arrived.

If you’ve still not recovered from last weekend’s antics, don’t bother, just go with it… I really hope you’re feeling decisive because once again there’s way too much to choose from this weekend and we’ve got our pick of the bunch to share with you. Tonight get yourselves down to one of the following: Detail with Brighton boy Russ Yallop at Basing House, Good:Vibe bringing disco legend Mario Basinov to a secret location in London, Lonely Hertz featuring the fantastic Ghostpoet alongside French Fries at The Nest, or the eagerly anticipated Diesel Island Disco with Goldie, Punks Jump Up, Aeroplane and the Kill Em All lads now at the Islington Metal Works (don’t forget you’ll need your passport to get in!)

Saturday’s got us in a spin too with many of our favourite DJs playing all across the city. Who to favour? Visionquest’s Lee Curtiss and Get Physical’s Audiofly take to yet another secret venue for Flying Circus London, Art Department host at Fabric playing alongside Richy Ahmed and Craig Richards, and James What heads up the Hypercolour Showcase with Dan Berkson of Pokerflat at The Nest. If you’re still not sold, how about Dollop throwing their 7th Birthday Series at the mighty Bussey Building in Peckham with Pariah and the Off Modern guys? The choice is yours…

Best get some rest at work today then and throw on some beats:

Space Shuttle (Leftside Wobble Edit) – Gil Scott-Heron
Into the Valley feat. Karl Dixon (Julio Bashmore Remix) – Classixx [via Green Label Sound]
On the Brighter Side (The Brighter Side Scuba Mix) – Sistol
Live Those Days Tonight (Tim Green Remix) – Friendly Fires
Organia – SebastiAn (Total dropped on Ed Banger this week – go get it!)
Hot Foot – Ambassadeurs
On! – Diplo & Douster

Woody’s Roundup

There’s nothing like a little drop of escapism to jog one out of work mode and into playtime. Tonight we’re doing the triple – heading over to The Book Club for Hold Still (Tim Filthy Dukes), then Counter Culture to see Stopmakingme, Punks Jump Up, Lee Mortimer and Justin Robertson, and over at Village Underground Kitsune have invited Rory Phillips, Jamaica, Classixx, Is Tropical and The Twelves to their party at Village Underground. If you don’t have tickets to this beware – they’ve only got limited numbers on the door. Down South Caribou and Four Tet are playing at the Coronet and Ramadanman is at Corsica Studios.

Tomorrow it’s The C90s Shine A Light single launch at the Lock Tavern, 20:20 Soundsystem are at Fabric, Doldrums brings Joy Orbison to Plan B, and Bugged Out/Greco Roman at XOYO sees Drop The Lime take to the decks.

Here are a few little treats from the digital world this week, notably some boogie funk from Kraak & Smaak. Yes, it’s true, listen for yourselves:
Kraak and Smaak – Dynamite (Kraak & Smaak’s Boogie Funk Version) – the new Dynamite EP is out exclusively on Beatport from 22 November, elsewhere 6 December.
Clock Opera – Once And For All (Little Loud Remix) The Hundred in the Hands – Commotion (Tiger & Woods Remix)
RAF – Self Control (Bottin Edit)
Mumdance – So Squalid Instrumental
Joe and Will Ask – Clive Onion
Selebrities – When I Look at You
Download all in one go: Woody 32

Some very nice little releases next week: Tony Senghore‘s new EP Score is out Monday 22nd, as is Stopmakingme’s Wrapped in Plastic on Kill Em All.

Also well worth a listen: Eskimo Twins on the remix of Everything Everything. Two names we always like to hear, and when you mix them together you get:
Everything Everything – Photoshop Handsome (Eskimo Twins Remix) by Eskimo Twins

Disque Oh!

We’re pretty excited about the Kitsune Maison party at Village Underground a week on Friday; not only is it my birthday, but Rory Phillips, Classixx and The Twelves are going to be in the same room, and because last time we attended the one at Heaven it was simply ridiculous. This is of course to celebrate the release of the Kitsune Maison Compilation 10, The Fireworks Issue, and on the tracklisting is Disque Oh! by Vaults favourites BeatauCue.  BeatauCue are playing at the Kitsune Club Night at Social Club in Paris with Digitalism this Friday, so they’ve put together the first of their new monthly mix series in honour of the mighty fox. With the excellent Pleasurekraft to start off you can’t go far wrong.

BeatauCue Monthly Mix #1 – The Kitsune Issue

From Lithuania With Love

Mario Basanov is responsible for the kind of beautiful records that you catch snippets of floating on a breeze, or that quietly enter your subconscious on a sunny day. Crystal clear vocals fuse with sparing yet sensitive bass just perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

His real name is Marijus Adomaitis, and he’s a secret genius, producing for an array of other artists, ranging broadly from jazz records, to pop, to his own style of deep house. His studio work is included in the Metal on Metal remixes of Kissy Sell Out‘s Her, Bloc Party‘s Flux and New Young Pony Club‘s Ice Cream.

We began to take notice when we heard the very lovely I’ll Be Gone, and other tracks to go and check out are: Caribbean Girl (Ilya Santana Remix), In My System (Make You Move) featuring Kathy Diamond, and Who’s Shot the Silence (released in 2009 as a limited 1000-copy edition).

He’s working with Australian label Future Classic (also home to Classixx), and their Après 4 Compilation Ep combines the wonders of Basanov, Arithmatix! and The 6th Borough Project. They call it ‘slo mo noughties house,’ and it is indeed perfect for the après party.

The latest Mario Basanov partnership is with fellow Lithuanian Vidis, and their first single Test came out as an exclusive download with Juno yesterday. The first album is due for release in June, so to celebrate they have their UK debut at the beautiful Adam Street Members Club near The Strand on 14th May.

Have a listen:

Mario Basanov – Who’s Shot the Silence? (aout6 sweaty remix)

Mario Basanov – Do You Remember (Arithmatix! Remix)

Woody’s Roundup

Last night we attended the DeadFish Family and Friends party at Public Life. Mowgli told us that the parties started off with he and his friends rewarding themselves after a lot of hard work on the label, and they do have much to celebrate. The next one is a Mowgli-birthday extravagaza in April. Can you go wrong with a rave in a toilet?

This week’s tracks are ones that have been much talked about by DJs and bloggers alike. I am still loving everything Classixx do so I’ve picked an oldie from 2008, and am intrigued by the mysterious Polargeist productions (on the excellent Bang Gang label). See what you think.

Groove Armada – History (from the excellent album Black Light)
Flying Lotus – Parisian Goldfish
Classixx – Dial 1 (Radio Edit)
Polargeist – Use Me
Les Gillettes – Pompeii (Original mix)
Jamaica – I think I like U 2

Here they are wrapped up in a zip: WoodyIII.

Heavy Artillery

While we await word of the next Hoxton-sized taster of Lincoln’s Engine Shed we thought it would be fitting to celebrate the work of resident Tom Staar.

Since we first saw him take to The Macbeth decks last year, his tracks have been getting air time from all the choice electro stars and not just because Moda’s label bosses have access to some of the most influential radio desks in the country.

The Tom Staar and Console EPs were just warm ups to the Disney’s Space Mountain sampling, bassier, dance floor smashing Heavy Artillery EP (due for March 2010 release on Moda) which houses Two Tone Simms, Cannon and Sling Shot .

Remixes of We Have Band, Basement Jaxx, Cassette Jam and Yello have already been completed and can be found on his MySpace page, and if what we’ve read is true productions with Doorly are being cooked up now…

Be it an introduction or a reminder – get your ears around Two Tone Simms on SoundCloud. School night raving just wouldn’t be the same without him!

Moda’s eye for talent doesn’t stop there either with singer Ben Duffy from the label’s hit band Fenech-Soler appearing on Paper Romance; Groove Armada’s excellent recent single from their new album Black Light (which was released on Monday).

So, to tie this up neatly, here is Tom Staar’s remix of Fenech-Soler’s Lies, and you can find Groove Armada’s Paper Romance (Classixx mix) on Woody’s Round Up posted last Friday.

Woody’s Roundup

There are just too many fantastic candidates for Track For The Day out there at the moment, I find I want to write something about every song that comes my way. 2010 is already proving itself to be one of those bumper years of creativity where monumental and long-awaited projects come to fruition. These are tracks that were recent runners-up, and have been giving me a lot of enjoyment in the headphones ever since.

New Young Pony Club – Chaos (Rory Phillips Remix)
Idiotproof – Gorilla (Zombie Disco Squad Remix)
MSTRKRFT – Heartbreaker, feat John Legend (Wolfgang Gartner Remix)
Groove Armada – Paper Romance (Classixx Remix)
Gorillaz – Stylo (Alex Metric remix)
Jamie Anderson – Vietjam

Or get them all in one tasty zipped-up nugget here.

Out on Monday:

The album that’s been doing it for me this week is the excellent Tourist History from Two Door Cinema Club, on Kitsuné from 1st March. I can happily listen to the whole thing two or three times in a row. Here’s my favourite track (although there are so many greats to choose from this changes day-to-day), What You Know.
