Rave Cooking

IMG_4726
I’m at that awkward age where I should technically be thinking about being a bit more domestic, maybe not going out until 7 any more, or perhaps when going out until 7 not carrying on the afterparty until it’s nighttime again.

I’ve tried to broaden my horizons; get up in time to see daylight, read the paper, cook. But I just really do love house music. So I found a compromise: rave-cook. Just whack the stereo up and make sure any movement that needs to be done – chopping, mixing (you catch my drift) is done in a suitable dancing fashion. Call it the Cookery Skank, if you will, and it always puts a bemused smile on the faces of my flatmates to find me giving it some in Club Min (aka The Kitchen).

I wanted to share a few little lovelies that resulted in a very tasty salmon hot pot (Wagamama recipe book) and a lemon and buttercream sponge cake (Rachel Allen) this weekend.

1. Kry Wolf, Together (Makes No Sense Remix). I’ve had this in my draft posts for this blog ever since I got sent the promo from Kry Wolf and Shadow Child‘s Food Music in January, and I wish there had been enough hours in the day for me to finish it. They’re the guys who collaborated with Claude Vonstroke on Turbosteppa, and this track went off last night when T Williams played it at the Electric in Brixton as part of the EXCELLENT Julio Bashmore tour.

You can buy this now, so you should.

2. Kate Simko, Go On Then (The Remixes)
I loved this the first time round, and I was always slightly dubious of remix EPs until I realised that they often come about because there’s one absolutely epic remix of a track that surfaces after the release, so the producers rise to the challenge, give some other people a bit more time to make some cool bits, and round two ends up being damn good. The one for me on this five-track feast is Ian Pooley‘s main mix, but Franck Roger‘s in there, as are Blond:ish. Again, out now and worth your pennies. It’ll make cooking more fun.

3. Gorgon City feat Yasmin, Real
Thanks to T Williams again for this bad boy; Gorgon City are RackNRuin and Foamo, and everything they’re doing is shit hot. The world and his dog are going mental for them right now, and deservedly so. I mean, just listen to that sneaky little bassline, sweet Jesus that’s hot! Out today on Black Butter records; we’re building a nice little playlist.

4. Lana del Rey, Summertime Sadness (Adam Freeland remix) – given as a free download when you like Adam’s Facebook page. This is a slow build and is actually just as good for comedown-cook (aka trying to eat a bit of toast then realising everything tastes like sand) as rave-cook. I felt a bit emotionally attached to this record today as the sun faded outside the window.

5. Miguel Puente – La Santanera podcast
This is slow and soulful and bassy – absolutely perfect for cooking, and because it’s an hour long you won’t overcook the veg while you’re busy faffing around searching for the next track.

So there you have a little recipe of weekend tracks, go forth and rave-cook.

Woody’s Roundup

Sorry we didn’t bring you a Halloween special last week folks, but Emily and I travelled up to Manchester for a double-header at The Warehouse Project, and frankly with Jamie Jones, Jamie XX, Jesse Rose, Julio Bashmore, Four Tet, Hessle Audio, Homework, Oliver $ and Seth Troxler on the decks, nothing in London could come close.

We’re heading out of town again this week, down to the South Coast for the Dirtybird All-Nighter at Audio in Brighton tonight, with the lovely Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin and Eats Everything. However, if you’re in London they’re doing the whole thing over again at Fabric tomorrow, and tonight you can content yourselves with WildKats at Basing House, and Jesse Rose at The Nest. There’s a lot on this weekend elsewhere too, with the legends that are Puente & Rosch playing at Basing House for Dented Melons, The Juan Maclean album launch party at Queen of Hoxton, and Catz n Dogz gracing the decks at Corsica Studios. We can’t attend any of this crazy fun (until post 1.30 anyway) because Vaults are back on the decks all night at The Hospital club, and you can come and see us for free by emailing your guest list names to [email protected] We’re on the top floor so there should be a pretty good view of the fireworks alongside some dark and dirty tunes.

Oh and if you’re still raring to go on Sunday (and I’ve seen the crowd at these Sunday parties, a very low percentage of them have been to bed) Creche has a stellar line-up once more, with Laura Jones and Waifs & Strays at Queen of Hoxton.

Here are some of this week’s freebies to help you get ready for the weekend.
Lana Del Ray – Blue Jeans (Penguin Prison Remix)
Duran Duran – Girls On Film (Drop Out Orchestra Rework)
Canyons – See Blind Through (DJ Harvey Remix)
Mighty Mouse – Ice Beer (Bootleg Version)
Till von Sein – Sassomon
Kele – Goodbye Horses (Q Lazzarus Cover)

Sonar roundup

I’m not a fan of retrospectives: it’s not very inclusive to harp on about a brilliant night/festival/set for too long, unless there’s some sort of constructive end to it. Go and see so-and-so here, etc.

BUT festivals like Sonar and Miami WMC are tastemakers and fixers for the rest of the year’s musical delights, and a precursor for the Summer’s selection in Ibiza, so I thought I’d let you know what tracks we heard out and about in Barcelona. Plus, it allows me to re-live it a little bit, so indulge me.

Particular highlights were the RA by Day party on Thursday, poolside on the roof of Hotel Diagonal, which started chilled in the sun, was moved up a level to fun old skool hip-hop and disco by Space Dimenson Controller, then brought to a sundown sweat-fest frenzy by Claude VonStroke. So many new tracks and highlights which we managed to ask him about later, but he warned us we’d have quite a wait, in particular for the release of Justin Martin and Ardalan’s epic follow-up to Mr Spock; LEZGO. I found a very small taster here – only 21 seconds but thank you to ‘Rainingcaps‘ and his dancing-while-filming brother.

A few other greats which you can get hold of now are Claude’s Take a Trip mix of Chilly Gonzales - I Am Europe, and J Phlip‘s new track with Claude under his Grizzl moniker for his vinyl imprint Krush Groov, BkupGrl, and of course my favourite, (another one I’ve been waiting patiently for) J Phlip’s OMG Remix of Russ Yallop‘s Rock Me, which is a bootleg and sadly not due for release (I think)… but you can hear it 12 minutes into this mix from March this year:

J.PHLIP & THE GRIZZL – BKUPGRL CLIP by j.phlip

Fun fun fun was the Jackmode party on Thursday night in a tennis club high in the hills overlooking the city (complete with a slide and see-saw) and it was nice to see Oliver $ drop his own Doin’ Ya Thang to a crowd very happy to try to sing/shout along.
Oliver $_Doin´ Ya Thang by oliverdollar

Zombie Disco Squad played some old skool classics including a great that we heard again dotted around parties in the week; the MK Dub of Jodeci’s Freek N’ You, from 1995.
Download: Jodeci – Freek N’ You (MK Dub)

All the beautiful people were at Ghoa Beach Club for the Hot Natured party all day on Friday. Dancing bodies filled the pool while we danced on ledges to the stealthy bass of Thugfucker’s Disco Gnome (Tale of Us Remix). Download here.

A-Trak at Sonar Night on Friday was ridiculous. His hands were moving so fast on the decks he looked like a smartly-dressed robot. He gave us a little taster of his new ‘mystery’ track Big Bad Wolf, which when it comes out on Fool’s Gold is going to be immense.

Great sets include Cosmin TRG followed by Tiger & Woods at Sonar Day on Saturday, and the legendary Rico Passerini has kindly uploaded the Cosmin set to Soundcloud for your delight:
Cosmin TRG Live @ Sonar Festival, Sonar Dôme, Barcelona – 2011 by R_co

We rounded the week off in fitting style with the Sunday parties, and a massive thanks to Culprit vs Leftroom for good sunny times on the roof at Hotel Catalonia in the day, then Get Physical for putting on a beach party at Mac Arena Mar through to 3am. Just enough time to pack and get to the airport for a Monday morning flight home (those crazy enough to go to work on Monday). So for now, we put Sonar to bed for another year, and content ourselves with hastily booking some flights to Ibiza, stalking producers until we get our grubby mitts on the tunes we heard, and re-living some of the joy at 5 Years of Leftroom (with Room 2 hosted by Hot Natured) at Fabric on 2 July. See you there.

A Great Big Box Of Love

I loved Lovebox last year, the atmosphere is truly a box (well, Victoria Park) full of love, the sun was shining (somewhat painfully, as we attended the sunday straight from Claude VonStroke‘s epic set at Fabric) and people smiled, made best friends, and sang to New Young Pony Club, Cut Copy and Chromeo, one after the other on the same stage. No running around, no missing things, just great great music and arms in the air. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

The lineup for 2011 has just been announced, including a UK festival rarity from Snoop Dogg (with Warren G in attendance), and the best way to show you is probably in pictorial form, so see below for Friday 15, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17th July. Check out the Ed Banger Arena on the Friday, Busy P and So Me will be teaming up for Busy Pictionary (I remember hearing about this on  the Australian appearances last year – So Me makes live art on stage while Busy’s on the decks), and SebastiAn (watch out for his new album Total, due to hit in May) Cassius and Carte Blanche will be playing as part of Ed Banger’s first festival appearance. Whoop!

Tickets here.

Claude VonStroke in Madrid

The first weekend in December was a dance marathon and Fabric’s line-up was extra special. The closing set from Claude VonStroke sent us off on our merry way into Sunday recovery. However, for Claude, this was only the start as he jumped on a plane to celebrate 16 years of GOA in Madrid. Luckily this set is available for download allowing us to re-live some of our Saturday night fun (with a little bit of the usual Spanish radio commentary thrown in for good measure)…

Woody’s Roundup

A huge huge thank you to the Ed Banger crew for giving us a slice of winter wonderland at The Warehouse Project last week. We’ve included two Carte Blanche tracks this week as Mehdi and Riton absolutely blew the roof off, and I’ve very much enjoyed watching their sets come together this year and distill into something completely reactive. We’re heading North again tonight for another monumental Warehouse lineup: Simian Mobile Disco, Holy Ghost!, Aeroplane and Tensnake to name but a few.

Down in London town tonight FACT magazine host Joy Orbison and Ramadanman at XOYO, and tomorrow XOYO is also the venue de jour for Bugged Out and Durr’s Christmas party, with Rory Phillips, Aeroplane, Holy Ghost! and Tanlines. The Dirtybird and Get Physical crews are heading to me ol’ fave Fabric tomorrow, so not only are Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin, Julio Bashmore and Catz n’ Dogz playing in room one, but in room two M.A.N.D.Y are live alongside Heidi. Over at Queen of Hoxton Orlando Boom sees Jac The Disco, Blamma Blamma! Mighty Mouse and Joakim shake it up real nice, the ultra cool Off Modern moves from their usual First Thursdays slot to tomorrow at Corsica Studios, with Dels and Egyptian Hip Hop, and Public House sorts out you easties at Drop East with Dana Ruh. Sunday it’s down the hill to The Lock Tavern for Round Table Knights and Duke Dumont playing our favourite Sunday knees-up, Blogger’s Delight.

More Thursday parties too as this week Night Slugs bring Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 to East Village and Counter Culture host Esper Magazine with Homework and Worthy. Counter Culture closes on 1 January so you really should get yourselves down there before then – it’s got that real house party vibe that we love.

Here are some tracks that will help you flick the bird at winter:

Monkey Safari – Stoned
Etienne De Crécy – No Brain (Munk Remix)
Villa – Beats of Love (The C90s Remix)
Moneypenny – Destroy (Midnight Conspiracy Remix)
Kink & Neville Watson – Metropole
Carte Blanche – Politrix As Usual
Carte Blanche & Kid Sister – Do! Do! Do! (Laidback Luke Remix)
Or all together: Woody 34.zip

Out to buy this week is Black Strobe’s Me & Madonna on Kitsune, complete with remixes from Tape to Tape and The Twelves. Worth an early Christmas present.

Woody’s Roundup

We’re quite excited to get ourselves down to Counter Culture this Saturday – a new venue under the arches at London Bridge (what did we do before there were arches in our lives…) open for 99 days only with a remit to bring art, literature, theatre and clubbing all together under one arched roof. And who better to experience it with than Round Table Knights, Zombie Disco Squad, Christian Martin and Solo.

Here’s why we love them: Round Table Knights – Autumn Mix 2010

Tonight of course we’re starting off the weekend at XOYO for the London leg of the Abracada label tour, with Villa, The Krays, Mustang and The Magician. The lovely James Zabiela plays at East Village for their Bonfire Night special, and That Mixmag Thing #7 at the Queen of Hoxton with Grum and Mumdance. Community have done a blinder again with Plan B, presenting us with Jamie Jones and Le Loup (Wolf+Lamb).

This week’s tracks are a mixed bag as we alternate between good clean Autumn fun, walking around in fallen leaves and feeling all wrapped up, inhaling firework and sparkler dust, to getting ourselves down n’ dirty on a sweaty old dancefloor way past our bedtimes.

Nasty McQuaid – Nasty Pulse (thanks to Off Modern for another amazing night last night)
Andhim – Patty Sue (Super Flu Suncream’s Remix)
Leni Ward – I Want My Heart Back (Sean Eskimo Mix)
Catz n’ Dogz – Sunset in the East (Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts Remix). Catz n’ Dogz’s album Escape From Zoo was released on Mothership on Monday and has been on repeat in the office this week. A good choice of release from Claude VonStroke for his ‘deeper techno label.’

The Glimmers – You Rocked My World
David E Sugar – Flea Market (Third Party Remix)

Neatly packaged: WoodyXXX

Oh my DAYYYZ out tomorrow is the Mitzwa EP by Hickup on Sweat It Out! and it’s very good indeed. Everyone knows I’m a sucker for a bit of woodwind. I mean who isn’t?!

Phlip It & Reverse It…

J. Phlip is one of those rare gifted DJs who I love to listen to…”, says Claude Vonstroke. J.Phlip is Jessica Phillipe from Illinois, in fact from a town just 2 hours south of the City of House to be precise. She’s an official member of the dirtybird crew and is currently Claude Vonstroke’s right-hand woman, warming up for him at a string of big name events with her genre-bending sets. In short, J.Phlip started out on a $100 roughed-up set of old belt drives, secured a residency in San Fran., signed to dirtybird, then caught the Berlin bug in Spring 2010 and is supposedly now in Europe.

Collaborations and remix opportunities with the dirtybird family truly show off her production. Most notable is the bass-heavy 2009 hit California; a collaboration with the main man himself. To get a bit more familiar with her style, there’s also her original dirtybird release Rumble Rumble from 2008, or more recently, Droppin Bomz On Your Momz from May this year. She has strayed away from dirtybird at times and Beatport can show you a number of other releases for labels such as Airdrop, Full Flavour and Nightlight Music.

The J. Phlip SoundCloud page houses at least half a dozen great mixes for promo, Proton and Buzzin Fly. What really inspired this post is a vinyl-only mix called The Other Side; highly sentimental, it’s her last vinyl-only mix, recorded in 2006 when she was still in college. There’s a little bit of everything spread across the hour and it still sounds so fresh:

J.PHLIP – THE OTHER SIDE (all vinyl promo mix from 2006) by j.phlip

Here’s a more recent one ticking must-haves off a list of huge tracks from this year, whilst brandishing that oh-so distinctive dirtybird sound stamp:

Woody’s Roundup

Emily and I like to pepper our office Outlook calendars with clubbing plans so that we don’t feel too all-work-and-no-play. Consequently both Outlook calendars popped up with a little message this morning reminding us both to ‘Kill Em All.’ Now I work at Tate Gallery and Emily works for the government, so I’d say that was a pretty serious threat to national security.

Fabric tonight has a killer line-up and everyone’s involved. Just look at that flyer – they could barely fit all the names on! So we’ll see you at the front. Try and pop into Queen of Hoxton too for That Mixmag Thing #5 as these free parties go from strength to strength (kudos on the dressing-up box last time) and ooooh, they’ve got Matt Tolfrey playing upstairs while Mighty Mouse and The Magician spin those disco decks downstairs.

Tomorrow there’s another flyer struggling to fit all their guests’ names on: Chew The Fat!‘s 13th birthday at Cable. Just look at them all – Surkin, Yolanda Be Cool, Tony Senghore, Foamo… Festival-wise, Offset in Hainault Park sees two days of debauchery, including Trailer Trash’s mucky little Miami Beach Party spanning Saturday and Sunday with Ali Love, Stopmakingme, Rory Phillips and Riotous Rockers.

We’ll all sleep when we’re dead, yeah?

Wolf Gang – The King And All Of His Men (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Remix)
Aloe Blacc – I Need a Dollar (Oliver $ Edit)
Zombie Disco Squad – Hobo
Filthy Dukes – Nonsense In The Dark (C90s Remix)
Cajmere – Percolator (Claude Vonstroke Remix)
Mark Ronson & The Business Intl – The Bike Song (feat. Kyle Falconer and Spank Rock)
Cassius – I ♥ U So (beautiful and epic – I’m excited about the new Rawkers EP on Ed Banger)

Woody’s Roundup

I must remember not to go to work on Monday…I must remember not to go to work on Monday….
Ha ha, who am I kidding – come Monday afternoon I’ll still be in the corner of a filthy London car park rave somewhere.

Soooo, the low-down for this week is as follows (and apologies – there are hundreds of events this weekend so we just couldn’t list them all): tonight Art Department play at Egg for Blow, BigInJapan sees Prince Pac (Jac the Disco) at The Book Club, and Hidden Cat plays Superfilth at 93 Feet East. If you want to sweat it out in a basement, Tim Sweeney and Tim Goldsworthy play at Plastic People for Warm, who also host a day-to-night party on Sunday with Jamie Jones at the Horse and Groom. Spanning Friday and Saturday is the L.E.D. Festival in Victoria Park (Dalston Superstore pon de afterparty), and Saturday and Sunday join the Cla’am locals (if you dare) for South West Four, both of which have an abundance of afterparties all over the place, including the lovely James Zabiela playing at Plan B in Brixton.

Dollop are hosting the Scrutton Street Warehouse closing party on Saturday night, which has had to move to CAMP after Hackney Council issued a notice preventing events there. Even the closing party? So support them down at CAMP as they have Ivan Smagghe, Thomas Von Party and Matt Walsh providing the entertainment.

Of course Sunday and Monday bring with them the Notting Hill Carnival, with Mad Decent Soundsystem playing a pivotal role once again, and in the evening it’s back into the car parks for Eastern Electrics, with room two hosted by Dirtybird. Justin Martin and Claude VonStroke on the decks at my favourite Union Street car park means a marathon dance session.

Your tracks for today include some carnival vibes from Congorock and Hervé’s Voodoo Chilli, but also a little bit of love from Poka and Cicada. Enjoy.
Matthew Dear – Little People (Black City)
Bonobo – Eyesdown (Warrior One Remix)
Congorock – Babylon (Fare Soldi Babbylorso Remix)
Cicada – Your Love (DCUP remix)
LCD Soundsystem – 45:33 (Prince Language Remix)
Cassius – Sound of Violence (Poka Emotive Dub)
Voodoo Chilli – Dance So Sexy

All zipped up: Woody XXII
