Tiga Non Stop

Tiga‘s 6 Mix show is a wonderful nugget of personality, and I always get the giggles at his outrageous view of his world. The next one is on tonight at 10 so you can see what I mean, but as a little example, he calls his forthcoming mix album Non Stop “a crystal ball through which you can glimpse the music-encrusted future I call now.”

Aside from this he very clearly demonstrates his skills at uncovering and selecting damn fine electro music (in typical Tiga style he calls himself The Seeker), and this is the main ingredient for the unwavering success of the Turbo label over the last 14 years.

As an avid follower I’ve been excited for a while now about his first mix CD in five years, especially as it weighs in at a mammoth 28 tracks. With that mix length you can spend some time building and developing, and I think starting with the calmly sublime Swingin’ Party by Kindness does exactly that, then layering some more menacing techno bass going into 4E’s Temple Traxx. Tiga says ‘This is the first mix I’ve done that embodies the ethic of “Tempos Without Borders”, starting out around 108 BPM before ultimately arriving at 126, the mythical “Golden Rectangle” of tempos.’

From Adam Marshall onwards it’s a full-blown party. In fact I could whack up the stereo, turn all the lights off in my house and happily pretend I was in a Tiga-fuelled sweatpit dancing my arse off somewhere in East London. Listening at my desk, I found myself typing quicker, doing the chair-shuffle and randomly shouting out ‘Yeah!’ every so often to no-one in particular (see track 23, Gladio’s Calligula). They’ve begun to get used to that a little bit when I’m listening to good music, but damn this album gets you going.

The snippets of vocal along the way are well-chosen and brilliant, Tiga’s own Track City Bitch and one of my favourites on there; Romare – The Blues (It Began in Africa). This into Auntie Flo and then Lula Circus? YES PLEASE. It’s a mix with enough recent-oldies as new sounds, but I like that; I am a fan of a revisit and instant classics like Duke Dumont‘s Street Walker and Auntie Flo’s Oh My Days don’t get old and it would be a crime to leave something by Blawan out of the tracklist.

Well done Tiga, you reminded me once again why I love you. He likes to make people party, and he has an ear for exactly what will do that. All layered nicely over a mix that builds you up so much you need to go out immediately after listening. A definite highlight is his own exclusive new track Plush, co-produced with Matthew Dear. It is out as a single 26 November, but you can get your hands on the album sooner than that: it’s out 12 November on Different Recordings/PIAS.

He’s at Fabric next Friday 9 November alongside Daniel Avery and Filthy Dukes. See you on the dancefloor.

Woody’s Roundup

Oh Fabric, you spoil us! Sweet Jesus this is a pretty line-up. If I were in London tonight there would be absolutely no question where I’d be (although Style of Eye is at The Nest and there is a Christmas offering from consistently superb party-kids Off Modern at the new Peckham Hotel), but our little rave-team is travelling to Manchester for the mighty Warehouse Project once again, to see our favourites Bowski, Fake Blood, Erol, Jacques Lu Cont and Boy 8-Bit.

December weekends have sweeeet DJs playing all over our fair city. Tomorrow there’s a Numbers warehouse party with Jamie XX, Steve Lawler‘s at Hearn Street Car Park for Onemore birthday, The Revenge is adding some disco goodness to the Horse and Groom, Shaun Reeves, Clockwork and Thugfucker are playing at Fabric, Hey Today! Are at Queen of Hoxton for Orlando Boom.

Sunday The Lock are proving themselves legendary once again, with Fake Blood, Riton

Time To Let Go by Filthy Dukes

Woody’s Roundup

Party season’s started, and this weekend there’s a veritable banquet of club nights to choose from. Tonight our favourite Kill Em All returns to Fabric, with Filthy Dukes, Stopmakingme, Jack Beats, Crookers and Style of Eye. Miguel Campbell is playing at the Horse and Groom for Coconut Ritz, and Lovebox are putting on a Bang The Box night at the Kentish Town Forum, with Modeselektor, Boy 8 Bit and Siriusmo.

Tomorrow Fabric comes up trumps again with Rebel Rave, with Damien Lazarus, Maceo Plex live, jozif and Art Department. VERY nice. Julio Bashmore‘s at Plastic People for Warm, and Mylo, Breakbot, Monarchy and Maxxi Soundsystem are at XOYO for Scandalism.

Then on Sunday keep yourself going with Creche‘s The Big One, with a 3 hour set from Jamie Jones on the Ministry of Sound terrace, and a 4 hour set from Kerri Chandler inside.

Woody’s Roundup

Hi all! I feel battered and bruised from a bit of a hefty schedule these last couple of weeks, but normal service has resumed, so it is with pleasure that I bring you Woody’s Roundup.

As far as your going-out options this weekend, we have a clear winner in the form of tonight’s Kill Em All and Phantasy at Fabric. Erol, Switch, Stopmakingme, Filthy Dukes and Jarvis Cocker. Down the road James Murphy is gracing the decks of XOYO for DFA’s 10th Anniversary, and at Basing House in Dalston (still not managed to go there yet) is Tpot, with Inxec and Burnski. Mixmag continue their free party series at the Queen of Hoxton, with Charli XCX and Tim Healey.

Tomorrow night the A Night With… series continues with Miss Kittin at a secret East London venue, and We Fear Silence present Circus Company, with Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts DJing, and Seuil, Sety and D’Julz. The Nest come up trumps again with Lemonade featuring Shake Aletti, whose new Inside Out is the sound of the moment.

There’s so much new stuff out there, but with an awfully long time to wait, so in the mean time I can only throw you some previews. In particular, the newest Jamie Jones remix, of 11:11 Project (Guy Gerber and P Diddy?!?!)’s Tourist Trap. YUM.

Woody’s Roundup

So it’s that wonderful time of year when Lovebox is upon us, and I’m pretty sure i’ll be ducking out of the office early for Busy Pictionary and Carte Blanche on the Ed Banger Stage and Metronomy and Beardyman on the Main Stage. And as for Sunday, most fun line-up ever?

Of course Lovebox means Lovebox afterparty, and the official soirees are at Cargo with Aeroplane on 15th and Ministry on 16th, with Seth Troxler, Alexis Raphael and Joe and Will Ask. Elsewhere Ivan Smagghe is playing at Plastic People tonight with Tim Paris under their It’s A Fine Line moniker and The Nest invites Grum and Mighty Mouse for Scandalous.

Trouble Vision comes to Corsica Studios tomorrow with dOP and Will Saul, and A-Trak joins Mumdance at XOYO. We’ll be heading to The Lock for Kill Em All with Stopmakingme and Filthy Dukes. You just can’t go wrong with a free party soundtracked by some fine electro sounds.
