Electric Vocals

After the legendary MK remixed Hot Natured’s Forward Motion we heard rumours that there’d be a collaborative EP with Lee Foss on the way.

We knew it would have some dancefloor pow (see b-side The Dinks) and some signature synths, but what we hadn’t bargained for was the beautiful vocals from Anabel Englund. I can’t find a previous Lee Foss track with a female vocal (except the Brandy sample on Keep My Cool), and it’s a really nice touch, sitting well with his brand of slow-groove house. Great lyrics too; just generally very lovely indeed.

A2 is Goodnight Moon, featuring a sample from the scene in The Wire where Kima Greggs and her son say Goodnight Moon from their Baltimore window. Lee’s already made a track called Stringer Bell so it’s safe to say he might be a fan.

Here’s a preview of the whole release, out 12 November 2012.

Track for the Day

When MK puts his name to anything, you KNOW it’s going to be a dirty, evil little club monster.

I have to say I did get a little saturated by Hot Natured‘s Forward Motion last year, mainly because I put it in early DJ sets where I practised it to death, but one of my favourite things about a perfectly-timed remix is it reminds you of all the things you first loved, and gives the track a new life.

And what a life it is! Out on Hot Creations as part of the Benediction EP, 29 October. Have a listen.

Russ Yallop Pulse Radio Podcast

The Hot Natured New Year’s Day party at new superclub Pulse in Blackfriars was everything we’d come to expect – a sunny sunny vibe (complete with rainbow lasers and plastic palm trees) despite the January chill outside and a line up to blow your socks off. Miguel Campbell, Maceo Plex, Richy Ahmed, Art Department, Robert James and ending with Lee Foss and Jamie Jones as Hot Natured with Ali Love on vocals.

One of the standout sets was an early one by Russ Yallop, and this podcast has been helping me to re-live some of the highlights of the night, complete with heavy basslines and some storming edits of the likes of Donna Summer (Yallop’s remix of Louie Fresco‘s So Good, forthcoming on the excellent No.19 music). Guaranteed to blow the cobwebs away.

Beep Dee

This month’s DJ mag’s cover-mount CD was uh-mazing, slightly less for the mixing than this man’s unrivaled ability to find and produce the best new music out there. Spybar Chicago presents Lee Foss, and among recent favourites such as Infinity Inc (Ali Love and Luca C)’s Games, was nestled Beep Dee‘s Sensations.

Beep Dee’s track Colorado was a highlight of Lee’s Hot Waves 001 compilation too, and it seems the young Brazilian, real name Cesar Werlon, is going to be someone to watch in the near future.

Woody’s Roundup

This week we’re getting it all for free, free tracks, free parties, with free line-ups that will blow your mind. This begins in earnest tonight, with the most ridiculous list of names ever – check out the flyer:

I mean hell-the-fuck-ohhhhh! The venue only holds 400, and you’re seeing Justice for free, so it will possibly be the most squished you’ve ever been in your whole life. I suggest getting down there about now and setting up camp.

After you’ve unfolded yourself, have a quick nap because you aren’t going to sleep for a while. It’s Fabric 12th birthday and to celebrate they’re putting on one of the legendary On and On…and On parties. It starts at 11pm Saturday and ends 5am on Monday morning. The line-up includes Ricardo Villalobos, Moodymann, Margaret Dygas, Lee Foss, Maya Jane Coles, Pearson Sound and Space Dimension Controller, so it’s a pretty special birthday. Woo!

There are some GREAT free tracks out there this week, and this makes me HAPPY!
Mickey Moonlight – Close To Everything (The Martin Brothers dub)
Metronomy – Everything Goes My Way (Psychemagik Remix)
Kolombo – Endless Summer (Gift Mix)
Miguel Migs – Close Your Eyes (feat. Meshell Ndegeocello) (Salva Remix)
Lil’ Wayne – With You Feat. Drake (Screwed By Brodinski)
MAM – Reel Sweet (the third in the Free EP series from Soul Clap)
MAM – Can’t Live Without Music
Gigamesh – It’s So Intense (Fare Soldi “Enrico Pallazzo” Remix)

Yeah!

Body Shiver

There was a time when all the Waifs & Strays releases were relegated to the annoying ‘not out for ages’ list. But it seems ‘ages’ is upon us; after the release of Be Patient last week on Bristol label Futureboogie, now Body Shiver is here. We first heard it on Jamie Jones‘s Fabric 59, and it’s fitting that his Hot Creations label should be the ones to release it, with the B sides Eat Into My Soul and a Jamie Jones/Lee Foss Hot Natured remix of the title track. A very nice vinyl package – buy it here.

Lower East

Most of the posts I write on this blog are a cross between ‘I love this track!’ and ‘something new is coming out from someone we love.’

Only once in a while do I write about a record label, and when I do it’s because everything they do is so fantastic that I cannot NOT give them credit any longer. It’s lovely when the label is the link across loads of great tracks, because you know where to look for more gems, and it reflects the excellent tastes of the label owner/founder.

That man is Lee Brinx, and yesterday his label Lower East released one of his own EPs, Over You, featuring remixes from Robert James and my current favourites WildKats (Lower East also released WildKats’ debut EP, Addict For You). The previous release was the excellent Kitchens and Bathrooms EP from Alexis Raphael, featuring remixes from Richy Ahmed and Lee Foss.

Lee Brinx, Cozzy D & Ed  Kane (Kanio/Dexter Kane), launched the label in June 2010, with a release every month since, including their own notable numbers in the catalogue – namely Dexter Kane’s Dex Appeal on the From The Ground Up EP, and Cozzy D’s My Mistress on the Bit On The Side EP.

The White Isle, it seems, is to thank for this forward-thinking outlook, as Lee sites a trip to Ibiza over the Millenium as cementing the change from guitar bands to decks, and he started playing in clubs from the age of 17. Now based in East London he is a resident at Creche, the infamous Sunday parties at 93 Feet East, Queen of Hoxton and other venues with open space. The next is ‘The Big One’ with Jamie Jones and Kerri Chandler on 9 October at a secret location from noon until midnight.

It’s a little bit of sunshine on the rooftops of Lower East London.

Shonky

Shonky‘s a name I’ve been hearing a lot on the grapevine recently, and he popped up again this month with a release on Culprit with the Oasis EP, made even more fabulous by the addition of a Jozif remix of the title track.

He’s also responsible for the clean beats remix of Maya Jane Coles‘s What They Say, and you can see his name alongside other talked-about artists Dyed Soundroom, on a remix of Lee Foss’s Your Turn Girl.

Olivier Ducreux’s early influences were mainly soul music, alongside house greats like Gemini and Kerri Chandler (his Michael Jackson Rock With You sample on 2010′s Cluborama combines the two genres pretty perfectly). He grew up on the Parisien club scene, frequenting Batofar, where he met Dan Ghenacia, label-boss of Freak N’ Chic, which led to a signing in 2005 for Let Me Ask U.

After a move to Berlin to discover minimal techno, Shonky honed his sound into a mixture of bleepy yet deep house, which lends itself extremely well to the open air, afternoon sorts of parties that we all love over the Summer. In fact Shonky’s a frequent fixture at the legendary Culprit Sessions parties on the roof of the Standard in L.A. (alongside regulars Soul Clap, Hot Natured, Heidi and Damien Lazarus). He also graces the industrial hallways of Berlin’s Panorama Bar once in a while, often playing the sunset session as the blinds are raised to reveal the view.

You’ll have to travel over the Summer to see Shonky play though, with dates lined up in Ibiza, Berlin, Paris, and Amsterdam. Iconic locations with a vibe that compliments deep and soulful house: might be worth getting your passport out.

Woody’s Roundup

Well pinch-punch-first-of-the-month, which as usual means that there are way too many good nights and not enough time. And as for you with the birthdays, there are DJs to see!

So, tonight, go old school with Marshall Jefferson at Fairchild (car park rave), or go see Waifs & Strays for free at That Mixmag Thing #15 at Queen of Hoxton. Oooh and I’ve just noticed Sishi Rösch is playing at the Horse and Groom for Coconut Ritz. Miguel Puente drew my attention to him and together they’re pretty unstoppable (more dates for both of them in London please!). To give you an example, here’s a little video from one of their Sonar appearances. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to post this as it sounds sweeeeeeet, and I’d pretty much kill to see either and both of them play anywhere at the moment.

Hessle Audio are at Fabric, with Pearson Sound and Joy Orbison, and you could keep it Fabric (we are) by attending the mammoth 5 Years of Leftroom there tomorrow night, with Matt Tolfrey and the Leftroom crew in Room 2 and Hot Natured (Lee Foss and Jamie Jones) in Room 3. We had great fun at Soul Clap’s 90s Jam with Lee Foss at the Star of Bethnal Green on Wednesday, and in between the two Lee’s off to play in Naples, at Gottwood Festival in Wales and DC10 in Ibiza. He was asking anyone on Facebook if he could borrow a pillow…
Glimpse and Miguel Campbell are playing The CAMP for Mutant Disco, Stopmakingme and The Deadstock 33s are playing the Lemonade Launch Party at The Nest, and if you’re headed towards the slightly more hardcore then Spectrum have their Summer Warehouse Party at Ewer Street Car Park with Nero, Kissy Sell Out, Chase and Status and Sinden.

I always tell myself I’m going to get out of the city in July as much as possible, and it never happens, simply because the July line ups are ridiculous for the whole month every single year. 2011 is heading that way too, with Nicolas Jaar coming live two days in a row at Fabric at the end of the month, Lovebox bringing everyone I love into Victoria Park, and The Nest continuing a fantastic booking job, with Julio Bashmore and Riton next weekend. Bloody good work London.

Bassheads – Is Anybody Out There (Greg Wilson Edit) – a walk down memory lane. Huge thanks to Greg for giving this away on soundcloud this week
Joakim – Forever Young (Discodeine Remix)
Jacques Greene – Lay It Down (Nacho Lovers Remix) the original of this is worth your pennies fo sho.
Theophilius London – Flying Overseas (Soul Clap EFunk Remix)
Toddla T – Watch Me Dance (SebastiAn Remix) Also worth your money for the whole release as all the remixes are great.
Lucky Paul – Thought We Were Alone (Gang Colours Remix)
Rainbow Arabia – Blind (Salva Remix) Rainbow Arabia have just announced a summer tour including the Shoreditch 1,2,3,4 festival next week 9th July.
