We bloody love Yuksek

One thing I like about mixcloud is that I’ve set up ‘new cloudcast’ alerts to my work email, and it brightens my day when a new mix wings its way towards me. Especially when it is someone I love, and don’t hear from enough: king of the remix Yuksek. And doubly especially when the description starts with ‘we bloody love Yuksek’ and the tracklist starts with his remix of the beautiful Lisztomania by Phoenix. French, tres chic, creating melodic electro, and, let’s face it, pretty easy on the eye.

It would be wrong of me not to share the love (and he can sing too, something I didn’t know).

Hey Today!

Kill Em All at Fabric blew our minds again this weekend, and the excitement levels felt like they were about to spill over as we ran from room to room, desperate not to miss anything. In between the mighty Erol Alkan and Jac The Disco we caught a little of Hey Today!

What I love about Fabric is that the industrial, subterranean surroundings are so wonderfully conducive to the electro-indie-rock hybrid that is my very favourite sub-sub-genre. Hey Today! played a hard set but one that suited room 2 perfectly, and had the crowd absolutely unable to contain themselves.

So get yourself to the nearest underground exposed-brick-and-metal space you can (anyone got a bomb shelter in their back garden? That’ll do), and have a listen for yourselves.

Take Me To The Club

We get on well with the Tape to Tape boys because their tastes in sub-genre seem to pre-empt ours perfectly. When we first spoke to them way back last year it was disco, then we all felt a little saturated, then again with a little afrobeat. This latest mix is perfectly timed as they talk about a more driving, pumping style, and with a bit of Russ Yallop and Discodeine I can see they’ve got that one well and truly covered.

Mowgli Mixtapes: December Edition

Main man Mowgli has released his monthly mixtape for December, and it’s a nice warm fuzzy vibe for the kind of dancing I seem to be doing this week – slightly wobbly with a glass of wine in one hand and a smile on my face. Beautiful pianos and low beats are what I crave at this time of year, and this mix is brimming with soul.

After releasing Camel‘s excellent Speak Easy EP as the last for 2010 on his Deadfish Audio label, Mowgli’s off to Milan for two gigs in the next week before returning to The Nest in Stoke Newington for New Year’s Eve, with Boy 8-Bit and Jesse Rose. Very nice.

Claude VonStroke in Madrid

The first weekend in December was a dance marathon and Fabric’s line-up was extra special. The closing set from Claude VonStroke sent us off on our merry way into Sunday recovery. However, for Claude, this was only the start as he jumped on a plane to celebrate 16 years of GOA in Madrid. Luckily this set is available for download allowing us to re-live some of our Saturday night fun (with a little bit of the usual Spanish radio commentary thrown in for good measure)…

Disque Oh!

We’re pretty excited about the Kitsune Maison party at Village Underground a week on Friday; not only is it my birthday, but Rory Phillips, Classixx and The Twelves are going to be in the same room, and because last time we attended the one at Heaven it was simply ridiculous. This is of course to celebrate the release of the Kitsune Maison Compilation 10, The Fireworks Issue, and on the tracklisting is Disque Oh! by Vaults favourites BeatauCue.  BeatauCue are playing at the Kitsune Club Night at Social Club in Paris with Digitalism this Friday, so they’ve put together the first of their new monthly mix series in honour of the mighty fox. With the excellent Pleasurekraft to start off you can’t go far wrong.

The State of Things

We all love the buzz that surrounds a new producer: unknowingly downloading some tracks, being impressed, someone mentions their name and it rings a bell, and then you start to notice them on blogs, in magazines, and talked about by other DJs… A fitting measure of this is the signing of Gesaffelstein‘s Variations EP to Tiga‘s Turbo Recordings. Out 9 November, it’s his fourth release since 2007.

In the words of Thomas Von Party “Finally someone has updated a whole genre of music that was due for a comeback. It’s the best of new wavey techno and early gigolo era electroclash updated by a handsome young french guy on a modern canadian powerhouse label. What more could you ask for?” Canadian powerhouse is correct indeed; after Turbo’s last releases Boy 8-Bit, Chromeo, ZZT (Tiga and Zombie Nation) and Azari & III, Tiga rarely puts a foot wrong in who he chooses to champion for his label.

If you’ve heard Gesaffelstein’s tracks dropping all over the place in big name mixes, check him out flexing his muscles on a stage of his own:

Woody’s Roundup

This weekend is another one of those where we’d like to be in three different cities, and three different clubs at once, but instead we’re settling for a three day party, which will probably spill over into Monday and make pre-Halloween zombies of us all. Worth it? YES.

So it all starts tonight with On the One at Concrete with Night Flight (Jac The Disco) and Capita!, whilst over the road Made to Play are at XOYO to celebrate 5 years of the label, with Jesse Rose, Zombie Disco Squad and Idiotproof. If you’re South, Trouble Vision at Corsica sees DJ Zinc, SBTRKT and MJ Cole take to the decks.

Tomorrow The Book Club pits Mumdance against Hold Still for a soundclash, and later on Stopmakingme joins the mighty Erol Alkan and Matt Walsh for Bugged Out’s birthday at XOYO. We Fear Silence brings Theo Parrish to Cable, and Tim Goldsworthy plays for Lostbahnhof at Life. Koko has yet another epic line-up with Mr. Scruff for Ninja Tune XX.

Then Sunday our local Lock Tavern is hosting Kill Em All, with Boy 8-Bit, Justin Robertson and Filthy Dukes. New Stoke Newington venue The Nest sees the launch of Potty Mouth Disco’s Sunday Sessions with Ali Renault. These Sunday parties are free, so swap your roast dinner for a sweaty rave-up, that’s what we say.

Single for the week is The C90s Shine A Light, out today on Relish, and a fitting follow-up to the fantastic 10:01. Whoop!

A-Trak – Ray Ban Vision (feat. CyHi Da Prynce)
Siriusmo – Wow (Modeselektor Edit)
