Woody’s Roundup

Friday has arrived! After an eventful week where Coogan fought Clarkson and we had our first glimpse of real sun, I’m ready for a party, are you?

While Minnie is up in the mountains, clubland, believe it or not, must go on… Tonight, another sterling line-up graces The Nest, with Julio Bashmore, Riva Starr, Oli D.A.B. & Robin, Rachel Barton & Nockall, but it is Saturday that has all the fun this week. Floating Points and Ramadanman are at Cable, Plumps DJs are back with Herve and Mumdance at XOYO, and the mysterious Love Fever returns to another secret Dalston venue. Last but not least, our favourites Public House have the next in their series of special guests and UK debuts; Norwegian Terje Bakke takes to the decks at Nomad, Old Street. Right then, let’s party!

Today’s tracks are a mixed bag, but it’s been that sort of a week…

Canblaster – Clockworks
Darabi – Truckin (The Love Supreme Reversion)
Detroit Grand Pubahs – Sandwiches (Danny Daze Soughdough Jack Mix) – Danny’s been getting some love on the airwaves this week with his track Fall Away From Love.
Golden Bug & Rodion ft. Lavinia Claws – Washing Machine (Bottin’s Spin Cycle)
Gucci Mane – Brand New (Rustie Remix)
Metronomy – She Wants

One for good luck ahead of tonight: Hey Love (Rachel Barton & Nockall re-edit)  – Dennis Ferrer vs. Riva Starr vs. Donna Summer

Strobelite Honey

Tom Flynn has been getting a lot of love from his old pal Tongy over the last couple of weeks with his track Italian Bounce (on Riva Starr’s Snatch!), his remix of Mowgli’s Caraibi (on DeadFish) and his bootleg Strobelite Honey all being aired to the nation.

So, it seems Tom has been working really rather hard as he also has productions coming up on dirtybird, Break New Soil and Mendo’s Clarisse Records.

In celebration of this, he sent through the excellent Strobelite Honey for your listening pleasure:

Made To Play’s Birthday Raves

Sometimes, when I’ve got too much time on my hands, I sit and I try and work out which label is really my favourite – Get Physical, dirtybird, Wolf + Lamb… Most of the time, I can argue any of them up to the top spot. However, the one that takes the title more often than not is Made To Play; consistently brilliant and an asset to the industry, always delivering the skills of a delicious line-up of DJ talent.

For me, the appeal is based largely on trust. Each release and signing is carefully handpicked by label boss Jesse Rose for its style and quality. If you have built a relationship with Made To Play, you have also created one with Jesse Rose’s impeccable taste in music, and it is as reliable as it is exciting.

I’m sure many of you feel the same way, which is why we should all join in the celebrations next month. Made To Play have announced they will mark their 5th Anniversary this year by releasing a brand new double CD complete with a 48 page colour booklet on 25th October.  CD 1 will have fresh material from all of the Made To Play crew and CD 2 will be a mix of the best of Made To Play’s last 5 years.

On top of that they will also be on a European tour throughout October. London is lucky enough to have Jesse Rose, Zombie Disco Squad, Renaissance Man, Idiotproof and Oliver $ in town on Friday 15th October (venue TBC), so save the date, and we will be making every attempt to hitchhike to Panorama Bar for this party: Saturday 9th October, Midnight Saturday – Sunday night. Black Rose – Live / Jesse Rose / Heidi / Riva Starr / Round Table Knights / Zombie Disco Squad / Renaissance Man / Oliver $ / Payme.

Here are a couple of new tracks we’ve had on repeat over the last week from the Made to Play camp. First is the Jesse Rose remix of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs on Play It Down.

PID003 – Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Garden (Jesse Rose Remix) by Made to Play

Second, a new track called Behind The Fence from those crazy Dutch guys, Homework, who we interviewed back in March. It’s coming out as part of their new Trumpet Express EP on Made To Play.

What a week, we were looking to the weekend for a rest! There’s no rest for the wicked though. This weekend’s clubbing sees Riva Starr and Hannah Holland over at East Village, Basement Jaxx at Jamm, Brixton and Moshi Moshi Records take over Bloomsbury Bowl tonight. Tomorrow you can catch up with Nelski over at Plan B, James Blake at The Rhythm Factory, and, for those who can’t make it to Space this summer, We Love are throwing one of their oh-so-special parties over at Ministry of Sound, showcasing talent such as DJ Hell, the fantastic 2020 SoundsystemRalph Lawson and Paul Woolford. If you’ve still got anything left after that, Ketoloco have invited Ilario Alicante for their Sunday Summer Special at The Light Bar.

Sunshine songs and a bit of fun are always welcome when a rare extended bout of summer comes along. So, included in our happy selection today, we have a remix of a track from drummer, guitarist and songwriter Florrie which features on the forthcoming Kitsuné x Ponystep compilation (released on Monday). On the tracklist is a band you may have noticed us keeping a close eye on, MAY68 (My Ways is sandwiched neatly inbetween Lo-Fi-Fnk and David E. Sugar). Which links seamlessly to MAY68 at Koko tonight. We’ll be heading down to Club NME to catch them still buzzing off a week of media frenzy, following their performance on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury last weekend.

(Art) School’s out for the summer, so this week it’s all about the student degree shows. Get yourselves down to Wimbledon, the RA Schools, Camberwell, Central Saint Martins, the RCA and Chelsea College because the work is truly amazing, and well worth the time. On the art theme, the legendary Bold Tendencies sculpture project (and Frank’s Campari Bar) opens next wednesday 30 June on the top 3 floors of Peckham multi-story car park in Rye Lane, hosting an unparalleled view of not only the city itself, but a showcase of beautiful site-specific sculpture.

Student shows means student afterparties, so one for tonight is the Chelsea 10 Degree Show Afterparty at The City Arts and Music Project (C.A.M.P). Entrance is free, and music is provided by Oneman, Deadboy and DELS. Also East, Time Out‘s Live ‘Nite Sessions‘ are at East Village, with Riva Starr, Hannah Holland and SBTRKT. Tomorrow Joy Orbison and Floating Points play Plan B in Brixton, Legendary Children are at Questionmark Bar in Stoke Newington, and Fabric host Radio Slave.

Some tracks for this week? Why not.
Voltage – All Night (Azari & III Remix). We just can’t ignore this – it’s a collaboration between Dan Whitford from Cut Copy and Nile Delta from Riot In Belgium. And of course, Azari & III on the remix.
La Bionda – I Got Your Number
Zero 7 – Ghost Symbol (Julio Bashmore Remix)
SunnyBeach HappySlap MardiGras – Conta (Momma’s Boy Remix)
Riton – Banana Song
New Mjondalen Disco Swingers – Eurodans
Mugwump – The Congregation of Discalced Clerks
Here they are all zipped up tight: Woody XIV

Definitely worth your hard-earned cash this week is the new Rodion For Ever EP, fresh out on Gomma. Check the Timelords-style rolling beats on Hold On Rodion featuring vocals from Jeppe Kjellberg of WhoMadeWho, and Alagoas Cowboys has been bouncing around tracklists for the last couple of months. Very nice!

Complex Rhythm Architecture

Resident Advisor published their RA.157 podcast by Reboot on Monday, which Reboot describes as “a nice range of the stuff I play and love to listen to at the moment. Something like a brief summary of a club set I would play these days.”

It’s certainly worth checking him out. In an interview with RA last month he described his productions as “complex rhythm architecture” from the Rhein-Main-House scene:

“If we’re talking about this Rhein-Main-House thing, we’re basically talking about a super-stripped-down house track, yeah? Without the filter-pianos or whatever, it’s like just this basic rhythm. Like a deep bassline, but funky and groovy, and this is riding down for six or seven minutes without anything happening really. So it’s up to the DJ to bring in some a cappellas or whatever, tools to make it interesting…”

Although Reboot has been in the business for a long time now, he was never someone whose tracks or sets I actively tried to catch or someone who I accidentally stumbled across in clubs. Last year that all changed at the Get Physical party in Miami. This is when I stumbled across Reboot and his track Ronson – may be it was just the party memories but it became one of my favourites of 2009.

Reboot has an album coming up on Cadenza and is currently touring Europe, Mexico and Canada before heading over to Miami for the Winter Music Conference, and then Ibiza for the 2010 summer season.

As well as the RA podcast you can also find his December 2009 Essential Mix for Radio 1 and his November 2009 Triple J Mixup below.

If this isn’t usually your sort of thing why not check out Riva Starr’s mix of Reboot’s excellent Enjoy Music (released on Defected in January) to ease you in…

Yesterday I Was Drunk

Jacob Wright from Resident Advisor calls it ‘boozecore,’ and Parisien duo Nôze seem to be having a LOT of fun making records.

Better known for their collaboration with Riva Starr on I Was Drunk, Nôze are Nicolas Sfintescu (better known as DJ Freak) and Ezéchiel Pailhès. Risqué lyrics, oom-pah beats and Russian kalinka rhythms all make for a hedonistic rush of a stage show, often ending with one or both of them naked.

Nicolas’s record label is called Circus Company, and that’s definitely an apt characterisation of their sound and attitude. Their friends M.A.N.D.Y. (also on Get Physical ) dropped their track You Have To Dance to end their set in Miami last year, and this is the kind of thing it makes you do:

NôzeYou Have To Dance, Get Physical, January 2009, from Songs on The Rocks.

Of course, who could forget the reason I came across them in the first place: their remix of the staggeringly beautiful Island by Dapayk + Padberg feat. Caro..
