We’re about to go off on our Christmas hols, so today is a day of stocking up on new mixes to soundtrack journeys. Until normal service resumes in the New Year I thought I’d share with you a few to load your pods with.
Stephen Fasano kindly gives us the sixteenth installment of his mixes as The Magician. Pretty damn lovely, and ending with my very favourite after-party melody: Hackman‘s Close.
The Magician is finally releasing his first solo ep, with Danish singer Jeppe Laursen, called I Don’t Know What To Do, and out on Kitsuné 3 October.
We’ve been knowing-and-loving Stephen Fasano’s Magic Tapes series for a year now, since he left Aeroplane, and he’s also been responsible for some pretty hefty indie-dance remixes, not least, Lykke Li‘s I Follow Rivers, Yuksek‘s On A Train, and partnering with Yuksek on Peter and The Magician’s Twist.
Ooooh, a collaboration from Future Classic DJs, that’s niiiice. A mixtape with all their new tracks, including new signings Scenic (watch out for The Magician remix of Another Sky) and New Navy. It’s a free download too. Enjoy.

Wow, one pops off to the beach for two weeks and comes back to a world exploded with music. Some absolute greats from Yuksek and The Magician (check out The Magician‘s remix of Yuksek‘s On A Train from the EP of the same name), and Mustang have given us two absolute beauts, with their remix of Golden Bug‘s Sex Beat from the Magia Potagia EP on Gomma, and their remix of Monarchy‘s I Won’t Let Go from the EP of the same name new from Moda Music. Made to Play have made a limited vinyl pressing of Round Table Knights remixes, with contributions from L-Vis 1990 and Homework, and that happy santa claus of techno Claude Von Stroke has remixed Girl Unit‘s 2010 banger Wut, which has made EVERYONE pretty excited, but no release date yet from Night Slugs. Finally Aeroplane releases My Enemy from the We Can’t Fly album, and even if you own the album the EP is worth it for the Rex The Dog remix alone.
Compilations are coming thick and fast too, with Moda Compilation Volume 1 out 23 May, including the first original material from Jaymo & Andy George, starting with their Night Music EP, and last week Lee Foss and Jamie Jones added another string to their bows with the first volume of the Hot Waves compilation, released of course on their own Hot Creations label. Chilly Gonzales brings us ‘orchestral rap’ withThe Unspeakable Chilly Gonzales album on 6 June on Gentle Threat/ Schmooze, and Toddla T‘s new single Take It Back is out on the mighty Ninja Tune on 23 May; a forerunner to his debut album to be released on the label later this year.
Obviously you’ll be spending all your money on these new releases so I’m going to save you some clubbing cash this weekend and tell you of two pretty epic free parties. Tonight, That Mixmag Thing #13 is at the Queen of Hoxton with Oliver Lang, Super Recordings Showcase and my favourites Riotous Rockers (their April mix was a joy as usual), and tomorrow Field Day host a free party with Omar S, Caspar C and Midland at XOYO. Well done all.
No sooner have I got my ears round Magic Tape Nine from the prolific The Magician, then he serves us another. Characteristically tracklist-less, but Stephen says he’s been excited by all the new tracks flowing out this month, so it should be a nice forerunner to Bank Holiday clubbing.
It’s that middle-of-the-month syndrome where you’ve got to the point already where you can’t afford to eat, and strangely; when you most need to stay in and conserve funds and energy, you somehow end up blowing your last pennies on the biggest dirtiest rave-ups. I want to say a big thank you to the Queen of Hoxton for easing the pocket with a great rooftop opening party last night. The brand new roof space is ready for the summer and we partied like it was 1999.
Tonight we’re migrating eastwards to The Nest, to see a bevvy of our favourites DJ for Scandalism, The Magician, Russ Chimes and The C90s to name but a few. Warm bring Mark E and Cottam to Plastic People- greats both, and Mark E’s Deny This has been doing the rounds in the last couple of weeks, and has generally received hoots of delight as a forerunner to the new album on Spectral Sound. If your tastes bend towards parties of the warehouse variety, then BokBok and Egyptrixx are playing at a secret location for Beat Redemption.
And let us not forget the mighty Record Store Day tomorrow across the country. Last year was steaming hot weather and we trundled merrily along to Pure Groove (sadly online only now, but still worth a visit) for a few drinks while we listened to and purchased some good music. Sounds pretty perfect to me, and there are events all day at Rough Trade East and West, among many others.
NB: Rapidshare has taken to showing people a little message saying encrypted downloads cannot be started unless you upgrade to RapidPro. You can still say no to this and download as usual with the ‘slow download’ option. Ignore them: stick it to The Man.
We’re quite excited to get ourselves down to Counter Culture this Saturday – a new venue under the arches at London Bridge (what did we do before there were arches in our lives…) open for 99 days only with a remit to bring art, literature, theatre and clubbing all together under one arched roof. And who better to experience it with than Round Table Knights, Zombie Disco Squad, Christian Martin and Solo.
This week’s tracks are a mixed bag as we alternate between good clean Autumn fun, walking around in fallen leaves and feeling all wrapped up, inhaling firework and sparkler dust, to getting ourselves down n’ dirty on a sweaty old dancefloor way past our bedtimes.
Oh my DAYYYZ out tomorrow is the Mitzwa EP by Hickup on Sweat It Out! and it’s very good indeed. Everyone knows I’m a sucker for a bit of woodwind. I mean who isn’t?!
I sometimes find that time nowadays is distilled into an endless list of dates I must remember. Largely Fridays and Saurdays, they are scrambled in my brain as a stream of numbers, obliterating what falls in between them. For example, November is 5,6,12,18,19 and 27 (at the moment), as I desperately try to remember that I’ve made plans on those nights and therefore MUST not drunkenly say yes when people suggest wonderful line-ups and club nights to me. Then once in a while a night will come along with a line-up so immense that it blows all tentative (and sometimes already booked) alternatives out of the water.
Abracada‘s London visit is just one of those nights. When writing this post I had to note down all the names on the flyer as by the time I’d got to the bottom there were so many I’d forgotten the ones at the top, and with Renaissance Man as a bonus special guest accompanying The Krays, The Aikiu, Villa, Mustang, The Magician, MikIX the Cat and Pilooski, it’s a busy billing. Like the label itself the night is an interesting mix of disco (Villa, The Magician and Mustang), hip-hoppy breaks (The Krays) and heavier electro (MikIX the Cat and Renaissance Man), and it contains all my favourite people.
The next two releases are the remixes of Villa’s Beats of Love, including interpretations from Mylo and Hannulelauri, out 22 November and Mustang’s Apocalypso EP out 13 December. Surrounding this the label have been on tour over in the US and are heading to Europe, with Paris Social Club this Thursday and XOYO for us on Friday (remember remember the fifth of November, right?). Here are some selected highlights (that we haven’t already posted) to give you a taste:
Emily and I like to pepper our office Outlook calendars with clubbing plans so that we don’t feel too all-work-and-no-play. Consequently both Outlook calendars popped up with a little message this morning reminding us both to ‘Kill Em All.’ Now I work at Tate Gallery and Emily works for the government, so I’d say that was a pretty serious threat to national security.
Fabric tonight has a killer line-up and everyone’s involved. Just look at that flyer – they could barely fit all the names on! So we’ll see you at the front. Try and pop into Queen of Hoxton too for That Mixmag Thing #5 as these free parties go from strength to strength (kudos on the dressing-up box last time) and ooooh, they’ve got Matt Tolfrey playing upstairs while Mighty Mouse and The Magician spin those disco decks downstairs.
