(Art) School’s out for the summer, so this week it’s all about the student degree shows. Get yourselves down to Wimbledon, the RA Schools, Camberwell, Central Saint Martins, the RCA and Chelsea College because the work is truly amazing, and well worth the time. On the art theme, the legendary Bold Tendencies sculpture project (and Frank’s Campari Bar) opens next wednesday 30 June on the top 3 floors of Peckham multi-story car park in Rye Lane, hosting an unparalleled view of not only the city itself, but a showcase of beautiful site-specific sculpture.
Definitely worth your hard-earned cash this week is the new Rodion For Ever EP, fresh out on Gomma. Check the Timelords-style rolling beats on Hold On Rodion featuring vocals from Jeppe Kjellberg of WhoMadeWho, and Alagoas Cowboys has been bouncing around tracklists for the last couple of months. Very nice!
Gomma‘s family values are already laid down in the first part of the ‘About’ section on their website: they call themselves “a music (and graphic) collective…Releasing not only new music, but also creating fashion items, starting graphic trends and creating fresh things in popculture.”
Gomma was started by Mathias Modica AKA Munk and Jonas Imbery AKA Telonius, with their first release way back in 1999. The idea of the ‘collective’ consciousness is important to them, as despite being officially based in Munich, the group is somewhat dispersed, with artists such as Rodion in Rome, WhoMadeWho in Copenhagen, Golden Bug in Paris, and even Modica himself currently residing in Marseille. A slightly disfunctional family by traditional standards, but it works as a ‘a network of young heads working on similar ideas,’ and with 150 releases under their belts it works well. Those ‘ideas’ include frequent art exhibitions, music videos, visuals for releases and live shows, a fashion line, and even a magazine. The obvious choice for a band such as Le Le, fronted by world class typographer Parra.
We’re big fans of the music/art crossover, and Gomma live up to expectations, producing Amore Poster Magazine, with art direction from Smal and Paze, alongside guest illustrators and graphic designers. As if all this wasn’t enough, Gomma started sublabel Gomma Dance Tracks last year, and have already released two compilation albums of their favourite bouncy-bouncy dancefloor favourites.
Both Imbery and Modica have released tracks this spring, with Telonius’s Hit Me out on 23 April, and Munk’s La Musica released on 14 May (his first single for more than 2 years). Gomma have given us a taster:
Telonius and Munk have given us sample mixes this month, and these are well worth a download for a flavour of what’s to come on the label. Telonius April Chart Mix
