Koh Tao Disco

Our friend Jay from Jac The Disco has been around the world and back in the last year or so, we’re constrantly green with envy at the latest scuba diving shot or amazing Eastern sunset, and it seems he’s been keeping a hand firmly on the decks in that time, while partner-in-crime Pac represents in London at his Legendary Children night, as well as appearances at Disco Bloodbath at XOYO.

They’re soon to be reunited, so we thought we’d pass on this little piece of paradise from the island of Koh Tao.

Woody’s Roundup

So tomorrow One From The Vaults makes its last trip to the ever-epic Warehouse Project in Manchester, before they finally close the doors on Piccadilly car park on 1 January. We started going in 2008 and it’s been an absolutely amazing four years. It has completely dominated our winters – from buying a million tickets in September, to knocking off work early on a Friday to get drunk on the train on the way up, drinks in the Northern Quarter and popping to the Christmas markets beforehand (and our new love, the North Pole bar – a temporary MDF igloo serving hot boozy apple-juice-and-cinnamon cocktails, which you sip under a rug on a sofa next to a ten foot tall polar bear), checking in huge rucksacks of warm clothing for the morning (sorry door staff), then finally huddling in Manchester station from 5am – 8am for the first train to take us back home again.

Such a huge amount of effort and our friends might think we’re a bit crazy, but there are no words to describe the feeling when you walk in and you can see a flash of light and hear the bass thud from behind an archway, or exploring for the first half hour as there are so many rooms with different vibes, or how many friends we’ve made there, or how emotional it feels when someone drops an epic bassline and those lights in the main room light up everyone’s faces. All the Essential Mixes (complete with our screams embarrassingly immortalised), all the new tracks we’d never heard before, all the ridiculous conversations in the smoking area, all the after-parties including the first year where we microwaved socks and set a kitchen on fire. Of all the places we travel to for clubbing (Miami, Ibiza, Berlin) this club is by far my favourite, and I’ll be very sorry to say goodbye. Keep up the good work WHP, it’s been a pleasure.

So anyway, we’re going up there tomorrow for Rebel Rave with Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Art Department, Robert James, Damian Lazarus and TEED live, but down here there are some big ol’ knees-ups worth getting your little bums down to. Tonight The Future Now continues its strong line-ups at Egg, with Hannah Holland, Dexter Kane and Warboy, and tomorrow Warm at Bussey Warehouse is soundtracked by Pearson Sound and Ben Ufo for Hessle Audio. XOYO tomorrow has Mylo, Villa and Joakim take to the decks, and You Are We has Laura Jones and Adam Shelton at Village Underground.

Some very nice free downloads as Christmas offerings from our favourite DJs this week. Thanks in particular to Jozif and WildKats, who have been giving away an entire series of edits from their DJ sets:
Little Dragon – Crystalfilm (Close Remix)
Wolfgang – Stay And Defend (The Magician Remix)
Leftfield – Not Forgotten (Eats Everything Rework)
Jozif – Thrill Her
Josif – Rollin’
WildKats – Signs (Prince Edit)
WildKats – Whats Goin On (Daft Punk Edit)

Woody’s Roundup

Once in a while it’s important to take a little time to relax of a weekend, particularly in between the final gasps of the late summer and the madness that is Christmas party season (which, as we all know, is well underway by November). So we’re officially taking tonight off.

For those of you who are on-duty, I’d say get yourselves down to The Nest for Neon Noise Project, with Punks Jump Up (whose November mix is very nice – get it here). Saturday at The Nest is damn good too, with The C90s (whose excellent November mix is also for download here).

Alternative Saturday night fun can be found at Basing House, who seem to be going from strength to strength on their line-ups, and I’ve still yet to step over the threshold (despite being a regular at Trailer Trash back in its On The Rocks incarnation). This week Robert Owens takes to the decks. Elsewhere there’s a Lovefever Yacht Club party, Nina Kravitz plays at Factory 7 (formerly Hearn Street Car Park) for Jaded’s 7th Birthday, Plump DJs are playing at XOYO.

Here are some of this week’s free download offerings – thanks to Jamie Jones in particular for his re rub, which he tells us is going to be the first of a few free tracks over the coming weeks.
Cécile – Ecstatic
Treasure Fingers – Take My Hand
Jamie Jones vs Heaven 17 – Penthouses RE RUB
Young Dreams – Young Dreams
Manix – Feel Real Good (Doorly Pigeonhole This! Booty) Vocal
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – Simple Girl (Tiger & Woods Remix)
Dro Carey – Promothug

Woody’s Roundup

Please, sunshine, please last until Sunday, pleeeeeeease?! We’re pretty excited about Creche’s Outdoor Music roof party at the Brickhouse in Brick Lane, Miguel Campbell and Alexis Raphael are gonna play some smooth beats and I can’t wait. Staying on a Sunday theme, Secretsundaze have their ’10 years of’ closing party at Village Underground.

Tonight Basing House continues its rise through the venue ranks, hosting Midland for Gotwood, while Prins Thomas plays a 3 hour set at East Village for Marketing Music, and Jamie XX plays at XOYO for the first part of their 1st birthday celebrations.

Tomorrow there’s a Krankbrother Terrace party with Nick Curly and MANIK (I’ve wanted to see him for tiiiime) but it’s legendary, and therefore sold out, with no tickets on the door as far as I know. XOYO birthday part 2 sees Juan Atkins and xxxy take to the decks, and it’s Ministry of Sound’s 20th birthday, with Joe and Will Ask, Alexis Raphael, Nic Fanciulli and Dennis Ferrer.

I must say, it’s become tough recently to find tracks to offer you guys for free, BUT here are some beauts from some kind peeps.
Joe and Will Ask and Kiwi – I Can’t Get No Sleep
Robert James – Vivid Nights
Urulu – Move On
Talk Talk – My Life (Tensnake Live Edit)
Flight Facilities – Crave You (Bxentric Remix)
Madonna – Bedtime Stories (Danny Daze Dark Rooms Mix)

And finally One From The Vaults, one of countless special records from a very special man. Our thoughts are with Henry, Pedro, Fafi and all the Ed Banger crew at this sad time.

Bank Holiday! Just when we were getting used to the five-day weeks. Not that I’m complaining, you understand…

So, let’s celebrate by getting as mashed as we can for as much of the weekend as we can. Tonight we’re seeing the mighty Tiga at XOYO for Bugged Out, then we’re straight off down to New Cross for Lunar presents the Carnival Party. They’re a new monthly night and this is round 2. I can’t tell you how important new nights are to me; catch them early and you get that house party vibe, amazing DJs in cool venues, and that whole feeling of being a bit naughty staying out late. Lunar moved to Release in New Cross because they were spilling out of the doors of The Nest, and Release has just re-opened after 12 months, so it’s time to go back to the South. It’s a car-neeee-vallll so playing are bashment kings The Heatwave, Hipsters Don’t Dance and new DJ collab Twin Peaks (Goulcher and Stocky).

Warm up your shake-it-muscles with a little mix from The Heatwave: Archive Mix for Lunar (particularly Ward 21Hotta Betta Phatta at 16 minutes in).

Tomorrow Black Atlantic brings Moodymann and Joy Orbison to a secret location, and there’s a Love Fever party too at Reliance Square, and Sunday The Old Queens Head have another All-dayer with Hervé. I love these slightly jaded Sunday-day-time affairs. Day parties seem to be the event du jour, as 2020 Underground are hosting Steve Bug and Jozif all day at Shoreditch Underground, then pick yourself up and head off to their nite-version, 2020 Vision Warehouse Party, with Mark E, Maya Jane Coles and Ewan Pearson at Village Underground.

A few notable tracks this week, including Munk‘s new release Mis Labios, out 20 June on Gomma, and another great remix of Monarchy‘s I Won’t Let Go.
One Hump Or Two – Detrot Grand Pubarz – Zombie Disco Squad Bootleg
Munk – Mis Labios (Black Van Remix)
Declaime – Apocalyptic Music (feat. Aloe Blacc)
Depeche Mode – Master and Servant (RSS Remix)
Monarchy: I Won’t Let Go (Jaymo & Andy George Remix)
Krafty Kuts – Lets Go Lets Ride
Chlore – Oh The Revenge – DARYL Remix

Hey Today free download

It’s been a while since I’ve delved into the punchy sounds of Hey Today! Probably not since their collaboration with Busy P last year, in fact.

Well they’re releasing a new EP on Kitsuné on 6 June with Black Strobe, Para One and Abstraxion on the remix, so they’ve given us a free download to celebrate:

Hey Today! – Minor (TWR72 Remix)

They’re playing at XOYO on 28 May alongside Feadz and Kavinsky. VERY much worth seeing live.

Woody’s Roundup

Wow, one pops off to the beach for two weeks and comes back to a world exploded with music. Some absolute greats from Yuksek and The Magician (check out The Magician‘s remix of Yuksek‘s On A Train from the EP of the same name), and Mustang have given us two absolute beauts, with their remix of Golden Bug‘s Sex Beat from the Magia Potagia EP on Gomma, and their remix of Monarchy‘s I Won’t Let Go from the EP of the same name new from Moda Music. Made to Play have made a limited vinyl pressing of Round Table Knights remixes, with contributions from L-Vis 1990 and Homework, and that happy santa claus of techno Claude Von Stroke has remixed Girl Unit‘s 2010 banger Wut, which has made EVERYONE pretty excited, but no release date yet from Night Slugs. Finally Aeroplane releases My Enemy from the We Can’t Fly album, and even if you own the album the EP is worth it for the Rex The Dog remix alone.

Compilations are coming thick and fast too, with Moda Compilation Volume 1 out 23 May, including the first original material from Jaymo & Andy George, starting with their Night Music EP, and last week Lee Foss and Jamie Jones added another string to their bows with the first volume of the Hot Waves compilation, released of course on their own Hot Creations label. Chilly Gonzales brings us ‘orchestral rap’ withThe Unspeakable Chilly Gonzales album on 6 June on Gentle Threat/ Schmooze, and Toddla T‘s new single Take It Back is out on the mighty Ninja Tune on 23 May; a forerunner to his debut album to be released on the label later this year.

Obviously you’ll be spending all your money on these new releases so I’m going to save you some clubbing cash this weekend and tell you of two pretty epic free parties. Tonight, That Mixmag Thing #13 is at the Queen of Hoxton with Oliver Lang, Super Recordings Showcase and my favourites Riotous Rockers (their April mix was a joy as usual), and tomorrow Field Day host a free party with Omar S, Caspar C and Midland at XOYO. Well done all.

Jamie Woon – Night Air (Solomun Edit) – I still can’t get enough of it.
SBTRKT feat. Little Dragon – Wildfire
Zomby – Things Fall Apart (feat. Panda Bear)
Jess Mills – Vultures (MJ Cole Remix)
Fleet Foxes – Grown Ocean
Toddla T – Take It Back – Dillon Francis Remix
Sticky K – Prince of Persia

And as for this from Turbo on 30 May: if you don’t know what it is, you should…

Woody’s Roundup

Friday hangover part III (apparently it was my idea to start adding Jaeger into the mix in the early hours of this morning), and it’s all thanks to our good friends Lunar, who brought the mighty Blawan to The Nest (Moby‘s playing there on Saturday) last night with Goulcher and Waylayers. This is going to be a monthly night so we’ll post the details for the next one and you can come and join us.

For hair-of-the-dog healing there’s an impressive array of nightclubbing around the capital this weekend, starting with That Mixmag Thing’s first birthday tonight at The Queen of Hoxton, with Layo and Bushwaka! In Flagranti and Julio Bashmore. For FREEEEEE.

Tomorrow there’s an ultra trendy Love Fever party at Shoreditch Studios, and Fake Blood, Boy 8-Bit and Bowski play at XOYO for Bugged Out, which, needless to say, is going to be BIIIIIIG. Mulletover celebrate their 7th birthday by doing what they do best; a great big dirty rave at the Great Suffolk Street warehouse. Get Physical take over Fabric, with their all-stars Catz n Dogz, Heidi and M.A.N.D.Y. BUT what excites me the most, is the re-launch of Steve Lawler‘s Harlem Nights, moved of course from it’s old home The End to 7 – 9 Crucifix Lane (what was the excellent Counter Culture, great venue). Whoop!

Put on your dancing shoes we’re going to the disco.

It’s a busy week for music submissions too – UNKLE have their new EP Only the Lonely out on Monday, SebastiAn released the first single Embody from his album Total, which I can’t wait for, out in May on Ed Banger, and Holy Ghost! gave us single Wait and See as a taster of their self-titled album, out on Tuesday on DFA. Bibio‘s much-awaited sixth album Mind Bokeh is out on Warp records on Monday, and you can hear single Excuses here.
SebastiAn – Embody
Holy Ghost! – Wait and See
Sophia Somajo – Wristcutters Inc (Style of Eye Dub Mix)
TV on the Radio – Will Do (XXXChange Dancehall Mix)
Yello – Oh yeah (Tom Staar Remix)
Yacht – Dystopia
Dirty Vegas – Change (In Flagranti mix)
Snug as a bug in a rug: Woody 45
